not really, its happened 17 times so far, most of them caused by democrats, all post southern move, the early ones were democrats against abortion in the mid to late 70's.

while some hate the use of a blog,it conveniently lists the past govt shutdowns, showing this is not only a common occurence since the 70's,but the country has always kept going reguardless of when it happened or which party caused it.

Yeah, I am old enough when government shutdown was considered a normal occurrence. 17 huh, I suppose this one is a big thing since it has been so long since 1996 and most of the young posters here have never lived through one let alone 17 of them.

Present Moment Awareness--have we ever had a shutdown so close to the threat of default after a TEAdowngrade and a major Recession? What will tomorrow's new stunts be following a TEAjerk chewing out a female uniformed National Park ranger? Or the hot mic? Or the TEAclowns with lab coats on?

Waaaah Tea Party! Waaaaaah! Waaaaah!

Sorry that the Republicans are actually sticking up for what their constituents want them to stick up for. Not everyone wants to be a happy little slave to Mother Government like you.

1995/1996 shut down was 21 days. Then it was extended for another 7 days for people in the Northeast because of the Blizzard of 1996.

The whole freak out about this is a really good indicator that too many of us are already way too dependent on government.

Greetings, NIMBY. :2wave:

Here's an interesting tidbit that's not making the news today, probably because of the shutdown!

"WASHINGTON. The private sector added a disappointing 166,000 net new jobs last month, and significantly revised down its estimate for August in a sign that labor market growth weakened through the summer, payroll processing firm ADP said Wednesday. The job market appears to have softened in recent months, said Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody's Analytics, which assists ADP with its monthly report."

That fact alone makes me glad I do not live in the Northeast.

The Chamber of Commerce is very concerned and they don't support Dems
Boehner has now stated he will not default, meaning the shutdown could still be going on.
And who will be hurt and who will be blamed in 2 weeks.

I'll take 44 straight months of private sector job growth and the number you quoted anyday. The Chamber is especially upset at Repubs for creating a continued air of uncertainty with these threats to our economy. That's them speaking, not me. Remember the 4.4 million jobs lost beforeBHO?

As blizzards go, it was a dandy! :lamo:

We get an ice storm or two down here, snow is usually a once every ten year occurrence. Even the threat of snow flurries shuts down everything and there is no milk or bread to be held in any of the stores.

Wiki also has a list of government shut downs.

"During the Ford and Carter administrations, there were 6 partial government shutdowns that affected only the departments of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare. "

From Wiki:

During the Ford and Carter administrations, there were 6 partial government shutdowns that affected only the departments of Labor and Health, Education, and Welfare.
These partial shutdowns lasted from 8 to 18 days and the primary issue of dispute was federal funding for abortion.

During the Reagan administration, there were 8 full government shutdowns that lasted only 1 to 3 days each, primarily over the issue of the United States budget deficit.

There was a similar 4-day shutdown during George H. W. Bush administration.

I do remember a year around 1990 give or take a couple of years where we got a six inch snow storm around the 2nd of March which shut down everything for a week or more. But that was the most snow I ever seen down here.
