D’Souza is a bitter convicted felon (pardoned by Trump), and hyper partisan hack. His version of history is misleading and incomplete.

Everyone who knows the history of racism in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries is aware of the Democratic party’s shame. They are also aware of the tremendous infighting over the party’s evolution away from racist beliefs and policies that led to the departure of those who supported segregation and subjugation of blacks to create the Dixiecrat party, who’s founding members included Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, who later switched to the Republican Party. The shift of racist beliefs and legislative efforts away from the Democrat party to the Republican Party is well documented.

Rather than simply dismissing your link to an article by Dinesh D'Souza and published on Fox's website as 'fake news', I will explain why D'Souza's analysis is misleading and not historically accurate. If you grasped this article as 'truth' and wanted to wave it in front of the faces of democrats that it's really they (gasp) that are racists. There are people such as myself who have researched many of the bogus claims made by Fox and their pundits. I don't research through any other website, I do most of it based on factual information presented as a result of studies or just simply by historic facts.

Political parties are never static, they change over time, their ideology gets transformed. Yet, people still retain their party affiliation based on nothing more than loyalty to that party out of tradition. The Democrats were once the conservative party, and the Republicans were liberal- like their founder, Abraham Lincoln. It is amazing how he fought to keep the union together with a strong “united we stand” central government while current Republicans vote for “States Rights” and “smaller government”, the exact opposite of what he fought for.

The democratic party then voted for Civil rights. This made the southern white racists in the Democratic party upset, so they left and formed their own new party- the “Dixiecrats”. The republicans, specifically strategist Lee Atwater who was Richard Nixon's political strategist, saw this as an opportunity. The Republican party openly embraced Evangelical Christianity and racism to get the Dixiecrats to join the GOP. It worked, now the GOP is filled with racists. Lee Atwater called it 'The Southern Strategy'. It's worth noting that Lee Atwater was partners with Paul Manafort and Roger Stone in a political consulting firm.
