If the Democrats are to have any hope of attracting voters from the Republican's core support base, I feel they need to rethink their approach to religion and spirituality.

Admittedly I am not very religious myself, nonetheless I can appreciate its value as a source of guidance for the ethics and morality of many people. Say what you will about the Bush camp, but undeniably they've done a stellar job at capitalizing on one of the key Democratic weak points, the lack of a progressive alternative for religious minded voters.

Anyone else feel this way? If so what do think the Dems could do to court this segment of the population more effectively?

This is more like US Partisan Politics and Political Platforms topic...

I read a lovely, if not wholly biased book on a related topic by James Carriville and Paul of Beugala of Crossfire. It goes along with that concept that too many democrats hide their religion. Their stance is that they need to be more like Bill Clinton who employed religion a great deal in his stances. It also remarks on how they don't capitalize on the morality in their stances on the death penalty and taxes (whether you agree with them or not they can be put in a manner that works well with most modern day religion.) It also talked about how they need to put emphasis on the more important battles in abortion instead of things like partial birth abortion which alienate most religious voters. But definately agree that if the democrats want more votes they need to utilize faith.
