I wasn't sure where to put this, but it does delve into media bias.

I came into politics during the Iraq Invasion and absorbed a lot of the Daily Show. My politics have changed a great deal since then. My initial reaction to a new show featuring Stewart was that it would not be relevant to my current political views. I now have the reverse opinion. He's still relevant, or gives a platform for relevant conversations that are largely absent in most media.

His critique of the mainstream media, corporatism, his conversations about racism, actual discussions about the oil and gas companies (nuanced and balanced) -- I would argue that he does this as well as John Oliver, if not much better. He doesn't always get it right (IMO), but he does a better job of covering the news and relevant topics than any mainstream outlet by leaps and bounds.

Comedians have historically had their pulse on relevant issues, but it's also extremely depressing that mainstream media has been a source of hackery, corporatism, warmongering and worse since I was politically aware. The reason far-right outlets have been successful is because everyone on both sides knows the news media delivers manufactured narratives and gilded half truths. The news media makes the population stupid, when it should be a source of empowerment.

Anyways, give the show a shot.

I find it telling that a guy that who made his $$$ working for a corporation and pushing commercials now has issues. Not enough to return the money of course...

I'm a huge fan of Jon Stewart! His debates with Bill O'Reilly are legend! I was saddened to see him leave the public eye. But for no particular reason, I have yet to see his new show.

Limbaugh always said liberal elites vote liberal while living conservative.

Who better than a person who worked for them to point out the issues?

And why on earth would he return the money?

That doesn't even make sense.

I had a lot to say about a company and an industry I worked in in my late 20's. I was qualified to make my critique having been immersed in it. And no way would I return the money I earned when I worked for them. That wouldn't even make sense.

I honestly don't get your point.

hypocrite - a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

I didn't act in contradiction of my beliefs. Neither did Stewart.

Are you saying that people who have worked in an industry, and thus, understand it, can never criticize that industry without being hypocrites.

And only people who have never worked in it, and thus don't understand it as well as people who have been on the inside, can?

Does that make sense to you?

Is this ...individual....attempting to suggest that if he thinks you are liberal and made money "working for a corporation" and "pushing commericals" and have "issues", that makes you a hypocrite unless you "returned the money"?

So if Stewart wanted to not be a hypocrite, he would either have to make no money at all saying the things he said, which nobody would choose to do. Or, he could just not say the things he said.

Wow. Brilliant. He's found a way to jedi mind trick the left into silence. You gotta be broke or you're a hypocrite. Because...errr..

Cheerist. Nope, there's no interpretation of that attack on Stewart that isn't painfully stupid.

The again I see a lot of this coming from certain directions. Righties claiming someone is a hypocrite if they support changing the law so everyone pays higher taxes including them a "hypocrite" for not trying to donate more money to the government every year themselves. Righties claiming someone is a hypocrite if they support changing the law so every country is putting far more effort into combating AGW are hypocrites if they take any sort of modern transportation. So it's not surprising to see an "independent" say that someone is a hypocrite for taking a left-lean critical view of certain specific things unless he tries to donate..... all of his money. It's just depressing.

(Extra credit: Greta Thurnberg was attacked for putting on a "stunt" when she took an emissions free boat. Of course. These examples are all bad faith attacks)

:ROFLMAO:

Uhuh. So...one of those posters who picks "Independent" as a label because it thinks it'll occlude rank partisanship?

Nah, it's not reasoned. He doesn't have any sort of logical ground. They make this hackish attack in multiple areas. Same exact structure. It's just a cookie-cutter way to excuse themselves for always knee-jerk opposing whatever it is they think the left wants. Fox hands 'em out like candy.

Always been a fan of his.

Will have to check out the new show - I didn’t realize he was back on the air. Did they go back to him and Colbert bantering? Because that was always fun.

Limbaugh always said liberal elites vote liberal while living conservative.
What a ridiculous stereotype. Limbaugh specialized in giving people reasons to hate.

People are different. They don't all act alike just because they hold similar views on one topic.

'Oh, they are all the same. Let's slap a label on them and reduce their entire lives to this simply little phrase.'

Not buying it. The world is very complex.

There are liberals with lots of money who do not live a lavish ostentatious lifestyle.

Of course he has logical ground.

Oh, like talk radio conservatives.

Wait, does it count if they don’t realize they’re hypocrites?

Of course he has logical ground.

Logical ground to state that John Stewart is a hypocrite if he criticized corporation(s) or the media in any way...unless he gives up all the money he made?

Well, this is going nowhere if you actually think that. The guy didn't actually identify even one specific critique Stewart made of something and one thing he himself did, then argued why these were sufficiently comparable to make him a hypocrite. This is not a situation where someone spent their life saying cheating and homosexuality are evil, then gets caught in a ten year affair with someone of the same sex.....

And more tellingly, if someone accepts the framework, they are bound to ignore just about everything anyone on the left ever says and probably drop out of politcal thought altogether12. If it's about AGW, they will have taken a plane at least once. If it's about tax cuts being too much, they will inevitably have not chosen to donate more money. And if they've gotten their message out, they will have invariably used some kind of corporation/media to do it. Youtube? There's value in followers/views, even.

I agree.

I think I misunderstand your post.

Thought you were saying Stewart doesn't have logical ground......

Conservative elite Limbaugh......multiple marriages, drug abuse.....
Doesn't seem like he lived a "conservative" lifestyle, does it?
You could also add cockwomble to that list...

cockwomble, noun, a person, usually male, prone to making outrageously stupid statements and/or inappropriate behavior while generally having a very high opinion of his own wisdom and importance.

A very brilliant guy. There is no "problem".
He was recently on Howard Stern and once again impressed me with his intellect.
Not your average dude.

Maybe assess what he's saying before dismissing it out of hand because he's a guy who made his $$$ working for a corporation?

Actually it does, since basically 100% of right-wing conservatives are hypocrites. How many of Limbaugh, Gingrich or Trump's affairs have resulted in abortions, for example. I would bet more than a handful. Why does ANYONE think Limbaugh was caught with a bottle of Viagra on his way back from the Dominican Republican; a place famous for sex tourism?

Limbaugh was among the most degenerate scumbags on the planet, AKA a conservative SUPER-hero.
