The past few weeks have shown some people's 'true colors'

We're not participating in the war, but we're gabbing about the war. And the war has been an inflection point. It has a lot of similarities to T**** being president (it will always be hard to believe that T**** was president, so to speak); with the biggest one being: We've been divided into camps. Another big way is: It's put people's ethics in 'stark relief.'

I just thought of what to add to this thread besides the above observation. I think this three-week war has shown what some people's beliefs about war and life really are. And it's shown how serious (or not) their commentary is.

Most people's commentary is either not serious, or poorly thought out/through. I won't say why I say that's true, now. I ask you: Is your commentary ever serious? Is your commentary (especially about Ukraine) well thought out/through?
Your first paragraph destroys you credibility. Not a very good example of how YOU "think through" subjects.

If "peace, love and understanding' was the answer, then the hippies would have solved all our problems back in the 60's - 70's.

You expected one generation to solve one of humanity's biggest problems in a short period of time?

self defense

I don't see how "The only way to disarm a nuclear power is to arm yourself with something more powerful than a nuclear weapon" equates to self-defense.

I gave you a hint in the parts you snipped. Here's one:

"You put your gun down first" doesn't work with me, and I doubt you either.

That's our current situation.

A better analogy would be you and me, your neighbor, having a cocked crossbow pointed at each other's bedroom windows. They are there for self-defense. Point a crossbow at me, Ima point one at you. If you pull the trigger, I pull the trigger, and vice-versa. Mutually assured bedroom destruction. If I leave and come back with something more powerful than a crossbow, an RPG for example, then you will put down your crossbow. What I do then is irrelevant, though that is what MAD is supposed to prevent. The point is, the only way to get you to put your <equivalent weapon> down is with a superior weapon.

I don't have a cocked crossbow pointing at my neighbors' bedroom windows. I don't even know which bedrooms they sleep in.

The entire world needs to disable their nuke weapon systems and nuke power systems. If my memory serves me well without nuke power there are no nuke weapons.
The lil NK gnome would like that.

Calling someone a hippie is not a good reply.
As I see it your "progressive" solution defies human nature. There are few more innocent than a 5 year old on a playground, yet if a 5 year old pushes another, the first will push back, this is ingrained in human nature. Do progressives have some magical means to override human nature?

Even moderates and conservatives have frontal lobes.

As usual you completely dodged the question. That's ok though, I wasn't expecting anything more than a grade school kid's answer, I wasn't disappointed.

I didn't dodge your question. Your theory is what's lacking.

Peace is the way. War is unhealthy for children and other living things.

….but “peace, love and understanding” will save the world?

We are going to have to transition to safe modern nuke power that is designed to not ever melt down. Agree, scrap all the nuke weapons. The UN needs to be much stronger, have the ability to verify all nukes being dismantled.

I think you suffer the same fate that you claim to observe in your OP.
I use to think modern medicine was way more advanced than it is, but its kind of barbaric and hit or miss when you get down to it. And that's just one facet of our modern society.

We have such an enormous gulf between where we are, and where imagination leads one to believe we might one day be. How do we get there when we evolved for a much more primitive lifestyle and are still plagued with violence and demagoguery, etc., all the while avoiding nuclear annihilation?
We may not.

Theoretically one way to jump that gap is to develop AI to the point that it surpasses human intelligence. In theory you would have a much greater chance of a reaching the capacity to solve hard human problems in a relatively short amount of time. But some fear this would be the end of human civilization. I think it would be our greatest hope. But that's far out on the horizon. We'll still be dying of cancer when I go, without a doubt.
"develop AI to the point that it surpasses human intelligence." Once the machines have the ability to improve themselves, envision and create more advanced machines, why would they need or want unpredictable humans around any more?

….but “peace, love and understanding” will save the world?

I believe I said I'd start with that. And I'd end with that. There might be some of that proverbial 'tough love' in that sandwich.

Thanks for driving by. Maybe I'll see you at the snipe hunt. :)

Great question. My first thought is with peace, love, and understanding.

Nuclear disarmament has always been through talks and treaties. Humanity could add a strong enforcement mechanism, too. As in: We could force nuclear weapons to be abolished.

There are solutions to all of our serious problems.

First, note that there aren't likely perfect solutions.

The best way to drastically reduce crime would be to drastically increase the distribution of well-being. No, I don't mean socialism.
Rainbows and pixie dust will help with your efforts as well…..
