The One-Term Presidency of Trump/Clinton

Interesting article. So, it really goes to show that - while the selection of Supreme Court justices will be a big issue - there are a lot of things that will not be accomplished in four years, that these candidates are proposing in their campaigns.

No, Trump isn't going to get a friggen wall built up on the US/Mexico border in 4 years.
No, Hillary isn't going to get the minimum wage up to $15 an hour and beat Isis in 4 years.
It ain't gonna happen.

At ages 70 and 69 by Inauguration Day in January, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton would seem to be unlikely two-term presidents. Not only would Trump become our nation's oldest person elected president (after Ronald Reagan), but should Clinton win, she would become the second oldest. Perhaps more powerful than Father Time are the odds that neither of these two highly polarizing and disliked candidates can heal a deeply divided country and become a trusted leader. Against the backdrop of a nation reeling from a burgeoning terrorist threat, economic deterioration, and painful racial division, the campaigns of two singularly unpopular presidential candidates have left most Americans feeling emotions ranging from disappointment to despair.

Should Clinton win, defying historical odds against bringing her party a third term in the White House, it would become incredibly difficult to keep it for a fourth. Republicans, far better positioned to win the White House in 2020, are already preparing themselves for a fierce competition that is sure to break out in the open in the early months of her administration.

In my opinion, the best-case scenario for progressives is to get a Progressive Democrat in after Hillary is done.
That would work out better if its Trump that is being kicked out, however.

I thought you were against the whole "vote in Clinton for now, try again in four years" idea?

I can see that if Hillary wins, a true third party movement will be created out of the remains of sanders supporters, republicans, and the middle class.

If trump wins, he's got to perform and it's hard to create results in four years. It's a cruel fact of presidential politics that the next incumbent is the beneficiary of the previous presidents policies, mostly good.

If Hillary wins, she has to walk away from everything she has ever said other than to issue blanket amnesty for all here and on the way.

Right now there are about 60% of all Americans give or take a point of two who dislike Trump and Clinton. Regardless of who wins, Trump or Clinton, I think the winner will be such a bad president that that 60% dislike will grow even larger.

That being the case, if Clinton wins, the democrats take the senate this year. But through most Americans become so fed up with her they give the senate back to the Republicans in 2018 and elect a Republican to the White House in 2020 providing the Republicans come up with a decent candidate.

Of course the opposite is true of Trump. If he wins the American people will become so peeved at him they give total congressional control to the Democrats in 2016 which would include a filibuster proof senate and the democrats take the White House in 2020.

They should all be one Termers, what do they think they are, George Washington? Go in, do your thing and hand it off the next Candidate, but they won't listen to me so now I say to them whoever wins in 2016 gets eight years.

If I have to choose between Trump and Clinton as to who will be a "one-term President," I'll choose Trump.

I've explained why in other threads. :coffeepap:

As I explain in the OP, a Trump Presidency will be good for Progressives and the Left in general.
Clinton will destroy the credibility of the Democratic Party, and Republicans, right-wingers and extremists will reign supreme.

I think Paul Ryan is hoping for that. He may be ready to run by then.

Ryan would be an OK President. Certainly better than a Clinton or a Trump...

The GOP asked him to run this year, but he declined. I think he's waiting for the right time. If he runs, I can't imagine him not getting the nomination.

That's not saying much, I fear. Bush and Obama are both better than Trump or Clinton.

Here is a radical idea: how about we wait till Hilliary and trump have one or two debates?

I think people's opinions of the current candidates will improve once the conventions are done.

I had to think a little bit, am I wrong? I'm thinking Sanders is going to destroy the Democratic Party and be a one Termer disappointing everybody like Obama leaving us in a Socialistic stall?

Only to you, only to you my friend.

So get behind my friend Hillary Clinton even though she's not perfect it'll be better than rewarding the Republicans after what they have done although we're hypocrites because we're rewarding Mrs. Clinton.

Know that Trump is no better and of the two of them neither should call the other worse or bad.

You have some nice things on your agenda now you should be worried about sending Mrs. Clinton a Democratic Congress.

There is no universe where I even remotely 'like' Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton.

There may be some things I reluctantly agree with Trump on, but that is where it ends, and it just confirms my suspicions about the dystopian path our government is 'leading' us on.

You have already made clear that you support neither candidates.

I will vote for Jill Stein. I will not be associated with the self-destructive, insane process of continuing to settle for the lesser of two evils.
The very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Are you sure you want to support someone who supports homeopathy?

Jill Stein Promotes Homeopathy, Panders On Vaccines

Jill Stein? Well at least she's a woman. Supports homeopathy? What? is she a new ager? what is her platform? Is she going to take on animal agriculture, gmo's?

Well your vote is important anyway any time third parties could gain enough.

I'll take that over someone who panders to multi-billionaires and military-industrialists, and an authoritarian ethno-nationalist - who, to be honest, might be mentally retarded - any day.

I honor your vote, would not try to change it and would encourage others to follow you but how are you going to get her to win?

She has the same problem as other Campaigns; how are you going to get your plan through Congress; the same two corporate parties you're talking about?

Every Candidate does this; they put up a plan and say, "this is my plan," and everyone looks and says, "my, this is a nice plan," and then they get elected and Congress stalls them and they loose their momentum and fall into the Washington changes them and they settle for getting to be President and abandon their plan.

This is true, but it might expose to Americans just how ruthless this duopoly is in its abuse of power and pandering to special interests at the expense of WTP. I'm more concerned about who Hillary and/or Trump will appoint to the SC, because they're both Neocons. I would be much more comfortable with a Bernie or a Jill appointing a Supreme Court Justice than either of the previous two jesters.
