A one million dollar grant to the Greater Houston Community Foundation from the Washington Times Foundation is more than it seems. Rev. Moon, the founder of the Washington Times, was convicted of tax evasion in 1982, and served 13 months in prison as a result. Since then, he has tried numerous schemes to attempt to receive a pardon for the crime. Moon applied for a pardon from the elder Bush, but unexpectedly withdrew the application. According to Jim McGrath, a former speechwriter for Bush Sr., this is not the way the Bushes operate. Looks like Bush Sr. made it plain that he would not pardon Moon under any circumstances. The current president Bush wont either, but it is not stopping Moon from at least trying. In addition to the one million dollar donation to Houston, he also donated more than two million to the Bush Presidential Library here in Texas.
The interesting part of this whole story is how much the Bushes, the Washington Times, and the Moonies, are joined at the hip. Very interesting reading.
