The new discriminated against minority...Americans that love their country.

I'd say the good news is that I don't see anyone posting here saying they hate America. So perhaps the concern raised in the OP is unwarranted.

I wouldn't burn a flag, not a US flag or any other. And I don't see flags being burned, except occasionally on TV where ya get angry protestors who are typically burning US and/or Israeli flags somewhere in the Middle East. A difficult situation that will hopefully improve sometime soon.

a tired blood splattered Army nurse, sitting alone on the floor, knees up head down, hair a mess barely held in a bun.

lack of attention to detail...you can tell that person was never in the military.

I never served, but the details of what goes on in a field hospital aren't hidden if you look, listen, and smell, and they don't change. Just mix in some panicked screaming, pathetic moaning, angry cursing, miserable crying, and a strong dose of bowel stench with an undertone of burnt flesh and antiseptic. And watch yer footing.

No I am not. I counted the posts. There are 18 individual names here on DP that said they enjoy seeing the flag of the US getting burned. I wrote the names down.

18 that totally HATE this country and its flag.

The two are interchangeable.

I know they are interchangeable in your mind, but reality is another matter. Please, don't let this fact ruin your "poor America" thread.

I love the things this country has done right and despise the things we have done wrong. Unlike you, I am not in love with the notion of being in love with my country.

I am fairly new to DP, and it was a lot of fun hearing opposing views from others in a respectful discussion.

However, recently, I have found I think there is a new minority in this country that is hated and reviled for everything they hold dear and stand for.

I am talking about Americans who genuinely LOVE their country and the symbol of that country in the flag of our nation.

I am standing alone on this grassy hilltop asking if there are any others here on this forum that also love the United States, and it's flag as a symbol of this country. It is only a piece of cloth made in China, but that is not what I am talking about. I am talking about what it SYMBOLIZES. The United States of America.

Is there any here that can boldly say OUT LOUD, and in public, that they love this country?

Even in the 60's the hippies did what they did out of love for their country and wanted to change the path it was on. History proved them right and they won, but they won because they still loved their country and needed to change its course. They did not win because they hated it and wanted to see it destroyed like so many do right now.

So, anyone...LEFT...RIGHT...CENTER...DEMOCRAT...REPUBLICAN...LIBERTARIAN...or whatever...how many of you can say you love this country and stand with me on this hill?

(sitting down on the grass with a glass of sweet tea and a fried chicken leg. I got a whole bucket, but don't just come for the chicken.)

As an AX I believe there was a high probability that you went through SERE training. Remember the last day when liberated from the camp and the flag was raised?

Some won't get it. But it's not about saying "I love my country", it's about showing that you love your country.

If I get one more gratuitous "thank you for your service", I think I'll barf. But yet I was helping someone the other day and they asked when we were done if I was ex-military. I said "Ya", he said "I could tell". Then shook hands with a knowing nod and moved on.

>>>>

This super heated steam needs to vent soon or there will be no winners. Care for some chicken?

I have excellent attention to detail... walked point a bit too much to not have it... have the scars to prove it as well.

I swore an Oath to the Constitution which apparently you didn't.

I never swore an oath to our Flag which apparently you did.

I say I'm prior service- no 'ex' for me.... I tend to answer that question with army slang (that's affirm)- mostly to see if they were as well... :peace

Did I just stumble into some cheesy Hank Williams Jr. song?

So much wank....no one here has to live up to any litmus test on patriotism, even with hyperbolic twaddle in ALL CAPPS!

Then join the ranks of the America haters. You seem to share their philosophy.

Patriotism is "hyperbolic twaddle"....in your own words.

Or is it just American patriotism you hate so much.

Hmm maybe im just not paying attention but I dont know anybody in real life that doesnt love their country. I love my country and I have said it often.

Yeah, I thought so too. Evidently, just saying so can get you attacked mercilessly by some.

but...this is the internet, and that kind of behavior can be expected even if you say the sky is blue.

A North Carolina buddy of mine said once, " God must be a tarheel because the sky is Carolina blue ".

Image the wailing and gnashing of teeth if I posted that.

LOL

nice

well maybe im just different but I find it IMPOSSIBLE to get angry here on a message board, a quick thought of "wow thats dumb" or "that can get you punched in the face" followed by laughter is about the most emotion this place can get out of me. Im just not wired that way. This is a message board and it has no emotional affect on me on that level at all. Frankly i actually have no understanding of it.

But yes you are right there are the super dramatic and emotional here . . . I like coming here and talking to the normal folk and torturing the nutters and liars but I typically use real life for my social barometer . . .

Many of the personalities here do not represent reality.

Relatively certain very few people would care if you posted that.

I know getting that last nail out can be a real bitch, but please get off your cross and pretending you're persecuted because you "love your country." Most people do, or at least like it in more than a friend way.

Not to be contrary here, but having watched Eminem's Mosh video when it came out, I'd got the impression that there was some kind of pledge (ie, oath) beginning "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America *plane crash* and to the republic for which it stands..."

Maybe not all Americans say it; but many, maybe even most, I would've thought...?

Edit: Actually upon a little Googling, it seems that it was originally written by a socialist, so it probably doesn't count.

I have some major issues with the premise of this thread, basically the same ones that others have already pointed out. I don't need to be on your hill, eating your chicken to love my country. And I can find flag burning appalling without seeing it as something that should be outlawed.

I also don't see why you would put something in this sub forum and not expect political discussion about it, and worse comment about how it shouldn't happen. That is the entire point of the sub forum you are in, political discussion.

I don't hate America. I hate phony baloney patriotism tests by people that think that sort of thing is necessary.

Your little call for "true 'merican patriots" is blather.

And shame on you for calling someone an American hater just because they don't fall in line with your dog whistle rantings. Loyalty tests are un-American.

No, they aren't. That's your OPINION. Nothing more.

No it is not. They ARE interchangeable and the same thing.

Saying they are not, is going against logic and history.

PS...take your arguments to the International Olympic Committee and tell them to NOT fly the flags of the nationalities of those that won the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

They ALSO agree with me.

Imagine the PRIDE those athletes have as they stand under their nations flag and hear their countries national anthem played.

I CAN imagine it. You never will. ... and that is your loss.

Anyone else who has pride in their nation and their flag also agree with me. No matter what nation or what flag.

The two are interchangeable.

You and your ideas are a small minority in the world of nations.

Again...your loss.

You contradict yourself.

In your previous post you said patriotism was "hyperbolic twaddle".

That pretty much sums up your attitude about the nation of which you are a citizen.

You fit right in there with the America haters. They agree with you 100%.

Blah, blah, blah. More opinion mispresented as facts. They are not interchangeable no matter how much you want them to be. I warned you about this thread from the beginning... and I was right. You define someone loving their country as loving it in the way YOU chose to love it. That's UnAmerican. It's as UnAmerican as The House UnAmerican Activities Committee was and as UnAmerican as Joe McCarthy's positions. Your idea that one must love American in your way only, makes American SMALL and NARROW. It's neither of those things. YOU don't get to define how one loves their country. Each of us does for ourselves.

and instead you want me to morph the way I love my country to fit your ideas. Ain't gonna happen.

There is NOTHING wrong with love of this country, love of its flag, and love of what that flag represents. Deal with it.

I have said so out loud and in broad daylight. You cannot seem to do or say the same thing. To you, there are "conditions".

I do not think the way you do, and never will.

I love my country, I love its flag, and I love what that flag represents.

If you disagree with this, then that is YOUR issue, not mine.

Bye.

 Not even remotely true of course, though it's an understandable and ancient attitude. Confusion between the thing and its symbol is precisely why the bible is so anti-idolatry, after all.

I've got an Australian flag on my bedsheets; I certainly hope no-one ever sullies my whole country with the.. oooh sinful deeds which that particular flag has seen

No. You really are misunderstanding here or just being stubborn. He's not saying that you should change how you love America at all. He's saying that you need to respect that others can love America in ways that are different than yours, in ways that you think are the "wrong" way or that are offensive (right now at least) to you.

and instead you want me to morph the way I love my country to fit your ideas. Ain't gonna happen.

Where did I say that? That's what YOU'RE doing. You can love your country anyway you want. But you cannot tell ME how I can love my country.

There is NOTHING wrong with love of this country, love of its flag, and love of what that flag represents. Deal with it.

And I never said there was. Deal with THAT.

I have said so out loud and in broad daylight. You cannot seem to do or say the same thing. To you, there are "conditions".

No. You are not listening because you want everyone to believe what you believe, lockstep. I love my country. I've said so. I would never burn the flag. I've said so. I love the symbolism of the flag. What I neither love nor accept is ANYONE telling me or anyone else HOW they are supposed to love their country. You have no authority to do so.

I do not think the way you do, and never will.

And I refuse to be as authoritarian as you. You want to tell others how they should think. I do not.

I love my country, I love its flag, and I love what that flag represents.

As do I... as I have said from my first post. You just don't like the fact that I've called you out on your authoritarian position where you are trying to tell others what how they should love their country.

If you disagree with this, then that is YOUR issue, not mine.

Bye.

You have no standing to tell anyone else how they should love their country. Only you, yourself. If you disagree with this, that's YOUR issue, not mine.

No, your phony little patriotism test is twaddle, as is your proclamation about "America haters"

You paint a simplistic world where anyone not filled with the same level of bs as you is not a patriot.

I didn't say patriotism is hyperbolic twaddle, I said your rantings were, evidently you can't comprehend very well.

Must be lonely on that hill of hubris you built.

I am taking my American flag and leaving the hill. No symbol is more important to me than my own principles. I like to fly the flag, but I am more concerned with being a decent human being and seeing past symbols and borders into the heart of humanity. The struggles of life are not made easier by divisiveness and blind adherence to ideology.
