The National Archives Is Deleting Records About Trump’s ICE Policies

Last month, the National Archives came under fire for altering an image of the 2017 Women’s March to blur a protest signs critical of Trump. The archive claims their act was non-partisan and they were trying to avoid offending visitors.

But the controversy raised more questions about how else the National Archives is altering historical records and how that might affect the ability of future journalists and historians to report and write about the Trump administration and its agencies.

In 2017 the Archives agreed to let Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials delete or destroy documents that detail the sexual abuse and death of undocumented immigrants, and despite received tens of thousands of comments and hearing the objections of dozens of lawmakers, they moved forward with a plan last month.

To understand more, The Takeaway spoke with Matthew Connelly, Professor of History at Columbia University and the author of the recent op-ed in the New York Times “Why You May Never Learn the Truth About ICE.”

Does it mention why?

What is the reason for this?

The most anti-democratic and authoritarian president in the history of the country. Trump and his supporters will go down as a huge disgrace in the US history books.

But the historians will be unable to access the truth for their books.

If the DIE Religion (Diversity/inclusion/Equity) wins they will not be interested in truth, history will be just one more place to apply mind molding in the service of UTOPIA.

We actually see a lot of that already.

well, nothing sketchy about that.

Thankfully we still have an independent news media. At least those parts that haven't completely become state run media like Fox News.

It would be nice to have some reasons from a non-partisan source on this. According to the article, we have the following:

In 2017 the Archives agreed to let Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials delete or destroy documents that detail the sexual abuse and death of undocumented immigrants, and despite received tens of thousands of comments and hearing the objections of dozens of lawmakers, they moved forward with a plan last month.

Not all public records are open, and some things have to be under seal, most commonly with regard to children. For example, you cannot access government records against criminal defendants which contain information about their child victims as part of the record. You cannot access juvenile criminal records either. You cannot access psychological evaluations of children conducted by court-appointed evaluators. Some things are rightly not open to public consumption because the people who are the subject of the recordings are subject to harm by their exposure.

ICE may be trying to be covering terrible misdeeds, or they might be doing what is necessary under the law to keep the records of minors from being accessible and open to the public. More information is needed.

Exactly, just hide all Trump's dirty laundry and corruption, cover it up or destroy it, anything to save the new US King, Donald John Trump * Impeached from having his dirty deeds exposed to the public, present and future.

Yes, let's be thankful for what we have, because if Trump stays in power, we will have only state run Trump media or fox news if he can have his way. His cult members in the senate and his mindless worshipers will help him attain all his goals. They, along with their new master, are now all anti-American.....only the new King has to be honored, not the country.

Information control is key to fascist states

It is also necessary in some cases to protect minors. If you were sexually abused as a child and your and were in the Court system, your medical records (including pictures of the injuries on your body), witness statements, and psychological evaluations will all be placed under seal. If that is what ICE is doing, then they may be fulfilling legal obligations.

We are not a fascist state simply because we, as members of the public, do not get to peruse Court records of minors to uncover their sordid childhood histories.
