New York City’s shrinking middle class is now in full retreat, as masses of our most endangered population depart the city in numbers not seen since the Depression, according to analysts.

After decades of sharp income erosion in the face of relentless taxes, escalating living costs and wage reductions through technological changes, the full extent of this shocking exodus is laid bare in the latest US Census data.

That shows the city is losing 100 residents each day — with departures exceeding new arrivals. Link

Socialism is great until you run out of other people's money ... and other people to tax.

"Progressive" reforms like the minimum wage and onerous occupational regulations only serve to make it harder to get work and spur the development of technology to replace workers.

Taxes and regulations in the blue states have been increased far beyond the point of diminishing returns. The few people with government jobs are happy with fat pensions while other workers struggle and have no retirement. Excessive regulations bind everything down and make it hard to afford everything from housing to plumbing repair.

The only thing normal people can do is escape.

The 3rd NY sux thread in 3 days. I'm guessing this must be making the rounds on the Conservative media circuit.. So the Cons here got their orders on what to discuss,,

I'd suggest the Mods should merge all 3 threads, but nah it's been discussed and shot down in the other threads. And by next week the Conservative marching orders will be California sux.

New York doesn’t suck. I like NY, both the city and the state. NY government, taxes, regulations, and cost of living sucks, both the city and the state. There’s a difference, and that difference was described in the OP. I didn’t see anything bad about your beloved state, just the government and that governments impact on people.

Any comment on how the NY government, taxes, regulations, and cost of living doesn’t suck? Do you have an alternative reason for the reversal of growth in population and why the middle class is leaving NY?

Umm, the population of NYC has been steadily increasing over the last few decades, almost without interruption

And the middle class is leaving NYC for the same reasons middle class families have left NYC for decades and decades - cheaper housing

I'm not going to rehash what many people, including myself have discussed in the other 2 NY sux because of the Dems threads. But I will leave it at this, as was mentioned in 1 of the other threads there is no 'reversal of population growth'.

Actually it's been going up for quite awhile. If people want to take a snapshot of a certain period of time, then yep it's going down. But since the 2010 census it's gone up about 500,000.. Upstate NY growth is probably declining, there's no jobs, no businesses except Walmart and Targets up there. Young people are leaving up there, but downstate? Unfortunately NO.... There's plenty of growth down here. ..and way too many people. And Google and Amazon moving in will only make it worse.

I am not sure you should be gloating. Because these people will move to where its cheaper to live(probably a red state) and vote for the same type of nonsense that jacks up their taxes.

You do know that this happens in all major cities in the industrial world and has been happening for 40+ years....

There's also the reason my sister left NYC after 10+ years - to have more room to raise a family. She left in the mid 90's. It's still a nice place to visit.

The OP link has no links to sources and quotes a libertarian (gubment sucks) economist. What do you expect?

That is the same reason

From a right winger?

Nothing but stupidity and spiritual corruption

I have a daughter who lives in Manhattan now, She's in here 20's and dating/living with a Wall Street Lawyer. She has no complaints...lol

The rent they pay is mind numbing!! My God!!

Read somewhere it's now so expensive in San Francisco many restaurants are finding it impossible to find and hire waiters/waitresses... The waiters can't make enough money to live in SF. The places they can afford to live are 60-90 mins away from SF so they sure are not going to drive 90 mins for a waiting tables job. But the economy there is in overdrive too, so it's expensive.

NYC has a good public transportation system, so businesses can find workers. However, rents are so high in Manhattan that many non-mega-chain stores are going out of business

Hope you don't mean the one I started, because I didn't blame the Dems.

The claim in the OP was not that the population is decreasing. It's that the middle class is leaving. Got anything on that?

Yeah, I worried about that. But, as it turns out, the people who move to Texas from California, for example, mostly vote Republican.

Virtually every single poster in these 3 threads has said living in NYC is extremely expensive. Being expensive explains on it's own why MC people can't afford to live there. That's been going on for decades. But if you need a Conservative Newspaper rag like the NY Post to tell you that, that's doesn't make you look good. It's really a simple 2+2=4 type thing..

Anyway NYC and the surrounding areas the population has increased by 100,000's. So they must be doing right down there.

That may be true for Texas, but it is not a universal truth. Look at SC and VA
