The Meaning of White

How important is your racial identity to you? Researchers long thought it wasn't that crucial to whites. But a groundbreaking new study on whiteness and race relations by University of Minnesota sociologists shows that whites in the U.S. are far more conscious of being white--and the privileges it brings--than was believed.

The survey is packed with fascinating findings, some surprising (a stunning proportion of whites--77%--say their race has a distinct culture that should be preserved) and some less so (whites view their role in the social hierarchy more benignly than blacks and Hispanics do). Whites are more likely to say prejudice and discrimination put blacks at a disadvantage than to say those factors contribute to white advantage. And they are much less likely than nonwhites to attribute inequality to bias in the legal system.

I'd love to see the methodology of the survey. I can see 77% of whites saying this, if they thought it meant their ethnic identity (i.e. Irish, German, Scandinavian, etc).

How can you all say there isn't a white culture? I'm white, and I couldn't be prouder of the sheer coincidence that gave many other people the same skin pigmentation as me. And I'm very proud of the additions that my pasty-faced people have made to our modern world.
I'm proud of Twinkies, Eggo Waffles, and Wonderbread.
I'm proud of mindless pop like the Backstreet Boys and N Sync.
I'm proud of the art of Thomas Kinkade.
I'm proud of the spritual guidance of such luminaries as Jim Bakker and Pat Robertson.
I'm proud of the white literary tradition that includes Danielle Steel, Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson.
I'm proud of great white actors such as Gary Busey and Chevy Chase.

Can't you see? We invented bland! Away with all those blazing passions and those open minds. Away with those disturbing geniuses, with their talents and their creativity and their unique visions. I thank god we have white people -- you know, the watered down New Testament god, not that scary Catholic god. And definitely not that Allah guy. He's bad, right?

These researchers must not of taken any History classes. Colored weren't given the right to vote until the 60's, you weren't considered a citizen unless you were white, intermarriage was frowned upon by the church and some laws. Blacks came here as slaves not for white breeding purposes.

I'm surprised also, the media, education, hollywood don't make any film for this preservationism. Obviously they have been out of touch with the real feelings of white america--pretending the majority White America was just the opposite. A agenda. Why?

Ahh, that's what the article is plugging. Whites are suppose to not have "subtle ways to convince themselves." So the Meaning of White to this writer and obviously most of the posters on this thread means White Presevation = Racism. LOL Whites are the Minority in TX, CA, NM, AZ--I don't see any politician, media, radio-tv personality or TIme talking of giving any minority status to whites in these states. That's Racism.
 
I don't really understand what white culture is and I'm white! There seems to be so many different groups and sections of being white but are any of them completely the same? It is really hard to take this seriously from a guy named white because I know what his opinion is on a lot of these things. In modern culture, especially America, there is no such thing as being white. It can be used to describe some one really square, but that is not really a part of skin color. Most of these cultural differences seem to be more like stereotypes to me.

I would gladly compare my personal albedo with this thing called "white", for my utterly blinding whitness is as reflective as anything on God's green earth.

Of course, I don't care one whit about my skin color, other than the fact that my incredible whiteness is actually something of an annoyance since I burn so easily, but it does warm my heart thinking that this "white" must appear as something of a dirty beige compared to me.

I don't consider it "White self-hatred." There's just nothing particularly special about being "white" because "white" doesn't mean anything. I'm proud of my ethnic heritage, and consider myself lucky to be both Irish and Italian. But how does that translate to "white" pride?

Most other ethnicities don't really care about their "color" but rather their ethnicity. Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans are proud of being Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, more than they are of being "Asian." Try mixing up a Puerto Rican with a Honduran or a Mexican and see how quickly you'll get corrected. Or for that matter, mixing up a Cherokee with an Iroquois or Navajo.

If I were a Puerto Rican and you asked me if I had "Brown pride," and I said no, would that mean I had "Brown self-hatred?" No, it would mean that I was proud of my particular heritage, not the idiotic group that you tried to lump me into. So when I say I don't have "white pride," it doesn't mean I have "white self-hatred."

You may be right about the term "white". However, isn't being proud of your irish and italian ancestors amount to the same thing?

....what "same thing?" There are black Irish and very mediterranean colored Italians, especially from Sicily (where my family is from). I would consider them closer to my heritage than I would some pasty scandinavian or, god forbid, a Brit, even if the Scandinavian or Brit looked more like me.

I don't know, you'd have to ask them (if this "Many" that you talk about actually exists). Perhaps its a result of the fact that so much of Europe has interbred for so long that it's difficult to know their particular heritage.

Nonetheless, the vast majority of French people would consider themselves French, have pride at being French, and would take offense at being considered German or Belgian. So I don't really know where you draw your theory from.
