Russia recently launched its near silent nuclear submarine following several years of development.
The Borey Class submarine, dubbed Vladimir Monomakh, has a next generation nuclear reactor, can dive deeper than 1,200 feet, and carries up to 20 nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

Each of these "Bulava" ICBM's can carry ten detachable MIRV warheads, what they call "re-entry vehicles," capable of delivering 150 kiloton yields per warhead. MIRV's are what shook the Cold War to its foundation when they first appeared in the 1970s.

And the Kremlin's not dissuaded or slowing down with plans to build eight additional Borey's over the next year, at a very reasonable cost of about $700 million each.

The sub is just one portion of a larger effort at re-arming the Russian navy — the Defence Ministry allocated another $659 billion — for another 50 new warships as well.

Russia's currently engaged in its largest Naval exercise "in decades," involving four of its fleets — maneuvering within the Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and the Northern and Pacific Oceans. The exercise is an attempt to strengthen its presence in the Mediterranean.

Finally, Russia launched a new "Voronezh-DM class anti-missile radar system" along its southern borders in what some analysts believe is a response to U.S. Patriot missile systems in Turkey.

One in a string of building responses to what it sees as U.S. provocations within a sphere of the world it's eager again to take control.

Glad to see. America is rather lost without someone to demonize.

That's right. Now U.S. Government can justify the total surveillance of its citizens,- scary and angry Russian bear. By the way, the increase in military spending and higher taxes, and the deterioration of life - all can be blamed on the "evil Russian bear"

Of course not, Russians have their own Muslim problems.

First you need to develop Islamic fundamentalism, gives him a weapon. Beyond that declare him an enemy of humanity. Till can not write off trillions military budget. Russian, in this respect, familiar. By the way, the German gold will not have to return. (suddenly evil Russian bear, attack * laughs *)

Of course not, Russians have their own Muslim problems.

Which, by the way, cover up and fund the U.S. and EU. And also give political asylum.

By the way, my German friend said that in Germany, love often go to the t-shirts, with the inscription: "Bring back the Berlin wall in place, and make it twice above". Or T-shirt with a pattern - yellow-red Emblem consists of spica , a hammer and a compass, below the signature - "Born in the DDR". Says it is now fashionable. Is that true?

No, I don't think so. In polls, usually 90%+ of the East Germans and 80%+ of the West Germans say they're happy the Berlin Wall fell.

But among some circles in the east, there is some nostalgia. You know, much like some Southeners in the US who still fly the Confederation flag. You got a similar thing in east Germany regarding the DDR. Some who do that stuff maybe mean it, but I think most do it just to piss others off.

The reformed successor of the former east German socialist state party, the Left Party, wins up to 15% to 25% of the votes in East Germany, though.

Oh, consider this gold just a little bonus on top of that apple and that egg Kohl paid to Gorbachev for East Germany. ;)

Thanks for the reply. So my German boyfriend is cheating me. Although 15-25% did not seem too small. I guess a lot depends on the social circle.

Don't know if he's cheating you... maybe it's true among his circle of friends. But I've never seen anything like that in my environment, and I'm sure none of the people I know would find that fashionable. I see them selling some of that stuff in the center of the city, tough, but mostly it's tourists buying it, or so is my impression. Like the old Soviet medals or hats they're selling to American tourists.

So I take that you're Russian? What do you think of America, NATO, Germany and your own country, regarding politics?

Nope. They will direct their institutional paranoia back at Russia instead of at little old ladies who want to carry their knitting needles onto an airplane.

If Germany ever walk with footsteps back, it has more probabilities to walk back to Nacionalism, rather than communism.

Maybe so. Karl Marx - (German Jew) - the idea of communism. Hitler - fascism. The Germans have something to choose from.

So I take that you're Russian?...and your own country...

You are probably asking me about Russia? America, NATO, Germany. My opinion - 1) Russia is very lucky with President Putin. At the moment there is no leader of state in the world , equal to Putin. In Russia, in 2005 there was a civil war. And in 2012, according to the World Bank, in terms of GDP, Russia is the fifth economy in the world. And overtook Germany. http://databank.worldbank.org/data/download/GDP_PPP.pdf Real incomes more than doubled and the average salary increased eightfold. Who else can boast that? I was in Russia and I love Russian. Art, philosophy - not less important than the great German thinkers. Literature - it's fantastic. Great story. By the way, West slanders the history of Russia.. Russian politics are very peace-loving. Maybe I'm not objective, but, in my opinion Russia is the best country. By the way, I read somewhere - Dominique Strauss Kahn wants to receive Russian citizenship. 2) Germany - a great country. My opinion German soldiers - some of the best (natural German.), second only to the Russian. The rich history. The great philosophers, musicians (I especially like Wagner), artists. By the way the Germans are very sentimental (by that they are very similar to Russian) The strong point of the Germans - the famous "Ordnung". If we talk about the politics of Germany - in my opinion it is clearly weak. Of course in Europe, Germany - № 1. But feel - its policy is not independent. And it is strongly evident. But this is not surprising. Germany is still under occupation. Another Annoying - "tolerance." It is sad to see how a great nation degenerates on their land. My opinion - if it was possible to conclude an alliance of Germany and Russia - they would be the rulers of the world. and in the economy, and in the military alliance. But the Anglo-Saxons would prevent this union by all means. Because, in this case, they will be in the outhouse. 3) America - America died. What is now located in this place - it is evil, two-faced monster. The first victim of which, was the American people. America now - it's a fascist state with total control of the population. With medieval torture. With the Inquisition NSA. And even with the concentration camp (for example Guantanamo). Where people are kept without charge or trial. A country that kidnaps people around the world. A country that supports terrorism around the world. In brief country-monster. Is nothing good about the policy of the United States can not say. The Americans - very kindly people, trusting people. You could say - the big kids. Enterprising, hard-working (by the way as Germans). Large patriots. I feel sorry for these people. I think - will soon be an economic collapse. I think in the range of 3-7 years. 4) NATO - puppet. With the bad infrastructure, with a huge bureaucracy. As a military force - nothing. Capable of carrying only some peacekeeping operations. And that - rare and no qualitatively.

I liked your posting, not necessarily because I agree with everything you say, but because I appreciate your openness and honesty.

I'll let you know my view: I make a difference between the Russian culture and Russian government and current society. I am a great admirer of Russian culture. Russian culture is very deep, you had amazing composers, from Rimski-Korsakov over Tchaikovski to Prokoviev and Stravinski, many important Russian scientists and I think Russian classic literature is my favorite next to German literature (unfortunately, I rely on translations, as I don't speak Russian). I'm especially fond of Dostoyevsky and I'm currently reading "Oblomov" by Goncharov, which I enjoy very much (a satire only matched by the American movie "The Big Lebovski", IMO). Also, I sometimes wonder if the "useless person" today appears in Germany very often, maybe I am one myself. ;)

That said, I don't think Russian society is in a very good state today. It's corrupt. Maybe Moscow and St. Petersburg are florishing, but everything else is riddled by massive corruption, the mafia is usually more powerful than everybody else and the line between mafia and government/police is blurry. Then, Russia has a massive alcoholism problem, more than any other "white" country. And then, because of centuries of abuse by the government and authoritarianism, most Russians have become cynic. They don't believe in anything, are completely pessimistic and reject any moral claim anybody advances, because you're used the mighty and powerful will just play games with you. That's why you fail to see that at least much of the Western moralism is genuine. You simply can't believe any government will ever do anything else than abusing morals as excuses for power games. Also, Russia is suffering from the same illnesses the West is suffering from: You have a massive demographic problem, as fewer and fewer children are born (even less than in Germany or Poland), after losing more than half of the Soviet population to the independence of these countries. Then, you lose even more to alcoholism.

At the same time, Russians are once again falling for it. Your government has needlessly declared the USA/the West/NATO an enemy. Your government uses massive propaganda to shift the blame the scapegoats: The USA, the gays, the Jews, the Muslims. And Russians, in absence of even basic humanist and enlightened values (this lack is a heritage of 70 years of totalitarianism), and totally high on the substitute drug of nationalism, buy it. Russia today reminds me very much of Germany in the 1930s, spiritually and intellectually. You are not used to freedom and rule of the masses, maybe not mature enough for it (no big deal, it took Germany more than 30 years of occupation to develop a somewhat functioning civil society), and you compensate your rather poor situation with the substitute of extreme nationalism.

Putin? He certainly knows what kind of people he's dealing with, I give him that. He masterly plays with the sentiments and prejudices of the people, and is not shy of abusing them for his ends. Maybe he's even the best Russia can hope for, in its current situation, given that no President can govern without paying tribute to the "state within the state" (the old communist rope teams within the apparatus) and to the mafia structures. Maybe no other President could do much more than he does, and he at least warrants stability and some economic improvement. Although his track record on human rights and democratic standards is totally atrocious by the yardsticks of the developed world (mostly the West).

And Germany? Yes, I agree, Germany is not independent. And I think that's good. We fare better inside the American realm than we ever did before, both economically and ideologically. There is a very interesting German political theorist, Herfried Münkler, who wrote a lot about the merits of imperialism as a form of order. America is an empire, and we are within its sphere of influence, just like ancient Greece was within Rome's sphere of influence. And it grants us benefits unheard of before.

Americans are good people. You think they are naive. I think you are way too cynic, for historical reasons. They and I have values. And these values at least somewhat impact our governments' policies. Our governments are less bloodthirsty and hostile than other governments in the past, because they are held responsible by a very idealistic populace. And America's military capacity is remarkeable. Maybe you are right and Russia's is still very good; but America can still win any conventional war against any other country in a few weeks. The only problem for America are asymmetric wars against reckless guerilla fighters and terrorists; they abuse our "post-heroic" mindset (again look for Winkler for this term he coined; we in the West are not really willing to sacrifice our lives, which I think is a sign of humanist progress, not of decadent weakness, as cynics might say).

But I agree Germany's military condition is pitiful. If the Americans ever decided to abandon us, or are in a situation they can't help us, we are screwed. Russia has ca. 40 tank divisions ready within a few weeks, Germany only 1 to 2. And we have no nukes. If Russia ever decided to attack us, and America was in no position to help, we'd probably lose. But that's a rather extreme situation. Much would have to change until this becomes a possibility. But hey, who knows? Maybe in 30 or 40 years? What if world economy based on the $US collapses?

That said, it makes me suspicious that Russia is rearming and again declaring NATO the enemy of Russia. You'd have a much better life and society, if you finally accepted that you're a "white" country too. And if you left the 19th century mindset regarding security policy. I already said Russia today reminds me of 30s Germany. You too miss your status as world power. You face the same choice today Germany was facing back then. We decided the wrong way, which was a catastrophe for Germany, for Europe and for the entire world. We should have embraced our neighbors and the Western World back then. You should do the same. Just a friendly advice. ;)

Nacionalism does not mean it is going to be like Hitler's applied it.
Even communism wasn't supposed to be like Stalin applied it.

I like a lot your statements and you're view points to move on forward.
However, the Germans need to be proud of what the achieved, even during Hitler's regime.
Besides of what he did outside, inside the Germany he gave the greatest period of development which left tracks even until the now days.
If the Germany is usually called on EU as EU's locomotive it's thnx to that time.

Many of the secret Nazi's documents found were a big step on the world development.
And I believe the reason that the weapons were not used during World War was because each side was in doubt what the other could have found or possess on Germany's land.

I just don't understand the German people on one point.
After each defeat, they seemed to like the Versaille treaty and Potsdam agreement.
Even tho Hitler's evilness couldn't be compared with the one of the Stalin and the dirty play of the 3 heads Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt (they were worse than him imo), german people seems to be happy how the history was written for them after the WW2.

Well, I think I disagree with you on Hitler and that period in Germany's history.

I think Hitler and the Nazi time was the worst event that ever happened to Germany (not looking at Germany's victims for a moment). I think Hitler's rule in Germany was at least as bad as Stalin's rule in the Soviet Union, if not worse. It was just the different side of the same totalitarist coin. And what makes it worse in case of Germany is the fact that Germany used to be a very advanced, humanist country that should have known better than to embrace such an narcissistic brute.

Why was Hitler's rule the worst that ever happened to Germany? Because before Hitler, we were the country of poets and thinkers. And of scientists, maybe the most advanced country. The 20st century could easily have become a German century, and by that I don't mean a century dominated by German military power, but a century dominated by German culture and civilization. We could have been cultural leaders by mere good example.

But Hitler played it all away. He singled out of of the most productive and creative parts of the German people (the German Jews, who felt German and considered themselves brave German citizens for the most part, like Einstein, Freud, and dozens of others), and then even suffocated the rest of German creativity by enforcing conformity and militarism. Thanks to Hitler starting and accordingly losing the war, we're now haunted by one of the worst crimes ever committed in the history of mankind, if not the worst: The murder on millions of innocent people. Hitler totally destroyed the cultural and science life in Germany for decades to come.

If Hitler had not come to power, and the republic had persisted for a few years more, maybe the worst of the economic crisis would have been behind us and we could have reclaimed a revision of the Versailles Treaty (which was not at all accepted 1919-1933), and with it, again a dominating position in the world. Not militarily, mind you, as bullies, but as good example for scientific and artistic creativity and industriousness. Everybody would have loved to be like us, and it would have been very attractive to join our culture (which I don't think is genetic).

Today's German constitution is the best form of government Germany ever had. We're a social and democratic republic now. We finally live up to the ideals we always envisioned, to freedom, unity and industriousness. That we're only second fiddle to Americans is a price we have to pay, so is the guilt due to the total break with civilized culture we did by murdering millions of innocent people. That's a burden we have to carry, because we brought it on ourselves. But still, Germans are materially as well off as never before, and we're in a comfortable situation. Some victors over Germany in WW2 are worse off.

Or, to say it in the words of one of the greatest German poets, Heinrich Heine (in the first half of the 19th century), not literally, but the gist of it: Only when Germany becomes the freest of all countries, it will win the hearts of the world. It's not our military that makes us great, or our pride, but our good example and our freedom. And I think we're closer to that goal than ever before. :)

Re: The Launch Of Russia's New 'Silent' Sub Is Just One Step In Rebuilding Its Migh

I concur.

It's something that both America and Russia have in common. It could have been used to better American/Russian relationships. But what did we do instead ? -> Do We Really Want a Cold War II? - Patrick J. Buchanan - Official Website

Yes, the US needlessly pissed off the Russians and rejected their open arms after 9/11. It started with Bush, who ran a very confrontational policy towards Russia, and it has not improved with Obama.

The US powers that be apparently think they can afford it, due to Russia's weakness. I just hope it won't backfire on the long run.
