We get a rare insight into the fall of the Ben Ali regime in Tunisia in 2011 through the last calls of the Dictator while still in power. The calls have been recovered by the BBC.

Tunisia's Ben Ali: The Dictator's Last Calls

It shows he still thught he was in charge of the country while on the plane to Saudi Arabia and planned to return. In reality an interim President had already been announced at this point, and many of the close advisors he speaks with had already changed their allegiance.

Fascinating to listen to.

23 years is a long time. Poor fellow. He had been dictator for so long it was beyond him to conceive that those who had been at his beck and call could turn on him.
