Is there an inside joke I missed? The main character learns Kung Fu, and the name of the movie is, you guessed it, The Karate Kid. Spoiler alert: there were no kids in the movie using Karate.
 
'Karate' is a common americanized term for all sorts of martial arts.
 
It's a remake of the first Karate Kid, so they kept the title even though they changed the venue and the style of martial arts.

Yeah, it bugs me too.

I agree wholeheartedly. Comparatively, the movie was a lot more sensitively made and a lot less hokey, that's why I don't understand how the title thing could have slipped through.
