The Handmaid's Tale

I don't mean to necro this, but I also didn't want to start a new thread if one existed.

I have watched this show primarily because the art direction is so good. It's a visually well-realized show, down to very impressive levels of detail. They designed an exceptionally cohesive visual reality. Mesmerizing, even, at times.

But the premise is whackadoodle, which only gets moreso as they try to "explain" it; and for being a show with a reputation for being disturbing softcore torture-porn, it sure moves at a snail's pace.

Then again . . . I don’t know; maybe this show is stealth-stealth satire.

The best way to watch it is to pretend that conservatives write it. And the way they write it is to take all the craziest, over-the-top, zany fantasies "progressives" have about what they think American conservatives want, and put it up on the screen absolutely straight, laying that bat-guano insanity out for everyone to see. And especially for 'progressives' who take themselves far too seriously to ever get the joke to shower it with their adoration. The ULTIMATE troll.

Thinking of it that way, the show is really funny. I mean, sometimes flashes in the actors’ eyes almost seem to be saying to the audience, "you’re really taking this **** seriously, aren’t you?" as they can barely contain their smirks. Watch it. You'll see that.

Oh, don’t get me wrong; I’m sure the show is exactly what it appears to be. But my God, how I’d adore it if it were THAT subversive.
