The greatest trick Donald Trump ever pulled

Donald Trump has done a lot of unprecedented things since he started running for president in June 2015. He's attacked prisoners of war. He's bullied just about everyone in the world of politics. He's downplayed the white supremacist violence that led to a woman's death in Charlottesville, Virginia. He's said thousands, literally, of things that are not true. But the most amazing trick Trump has pulled as a politician -- and now as president -- is to convince lower-middle class, predominantly white voters that he is one of them. I was reminded of that trick on Sunday when Trump was asked whether he can relate to federal workers not being paid due to the ongoing government shutdown. Here's how the President responded:

  • "I can relate, and I'm sure that the people that are on the receiving end will make adjustments, they always do, and they'll make adjustments. People understand exactly what's going on. But many of those people that won't be receiving a paycheck, many of those people agree 100% with what I'm doing."
"I can relate." Let's explore that idea. Donald Trump was born into a wealthy family. His father, Fred Trump, was a well-to-do developer in New York City. Sometime soon after Trump graduated from business school, his father loaned him $1 million to get him started in the business world. And you know I started off in Brooklyn, my father gave me a small loan of a million dollars." Assuming that loan came in 1968 -- the year Trump graduated from Penn -- it would be the equivalent of an almost $7 million loan today. And as The New York Times revealed in a stunning piece last year, the actual amount of money that Trump reaped from his father was well in excess of $1 million. Try more than $400 million -- at least some of which came as the result of very questionable tax dodges and schemes.

Wealth aside, Trump is not exactly the average Joe. He was raised in New York City and, with the exception of his resort in Florida, has never lived outside the city. He went to private schools through high school. He dated models and actresses. He starred in a reality TV series for more than a decade. And yet, Trump somehow, in the course of the 2016 campaign, effectively convinced a decent chunk of voters -- especially in the Midwest hollowed out by manufacturing losses -- that he and he alone understood the challenges they faced in life. Since being elected President, Trump has kept up the I'm-just like-you drumbeat. Why? My educated guess is because, for Trump's supporters, it's less about the President's actual background -- which is elite in every sense of the word -- and more about who he is now. He tells it like it is! He sticks it to these self-satisfied elites! And I tend to believe that Trump's wealth and background actually make him more credible with these voters because he was one of those elites but is now running them down. He's turned on the elites, and they can't deal with it! Or something like that. Donald Trump considers himself the world's greatest deal-maker -- a salesman extraordinaire. Perhaps the greatest sale he's ever made is the idea that he is a man of the people. It's the sale that made him the President.

Donald J. Trump. One of the greatest con artists in history. Right up there with Charles Ponzi and Bernie Madoff.

Had to run an errand this morning. When I do, I often tune into the rightwing talk radio station.

There was a caller who said the delayed paychecks could hardly have come at a worse time. He said there was a real concern that he could lose his house. Then he backtracked and said but of course that won't happen because Trump promised it would be okay. He was bending over backwards to control the fear which would have boiled out into anger if Obama were holding him hostage for some symbolic down payment on a legacy project.

But since it's Trump he said that even though he is hurting, he is completely in favor of what Trump is doing, because we have to stop those child sex traffickers.

You know Rush's call screeners bumped that guy straight to the front of the line.

"I may lose my house but that's a small price to pay for what Trump is doing for the children."

Let me translate post # 1.

Donald Trump won the election when the MSM told everyone that Hillary was going to be the first women president.
Their foolish prediction was totally wrong. So since the election win it's been a never ending parade of the president is bad!

MSM keeps attacking with no effect. Just think of the asinine list of attack material they have tried and failed with.

It really amazing what president Trump can cause with a tweet or or off the cuff remark. ;)

If this person is a federal employee he’s missed at most one paycheck. If one paycheck is separating you from losing your house you need to downsize your house, you’re spending too much money

she lost her own race when she told Pennsylvania coal miners they’d be out of a job if she got into office.

Question I have been thinking about. What if Hillary Clinton became President and Trump started Trump TV? Would that have been better or worse than our situation currently? Eventually all of Trumps crimes are going to come to light and there's a very good chance that he might go to jail in the next few years. With Trump TV we would have had an even bigger microphone for the right and Trump would still be considered in a much better light than currently. He may have even created Trump Tower Moscow and become one of Putin's most staunch allies which as a private citizen is not a problem.

You mean like when Barry said his administration would be the most transparent in US history?

No, it would be more like Obama wasn't the kind of person you could relate to at all. That's what the article is about, that somehow this President has convinced his supporters that he could relate on any level to them.

There are no off the cuff comments from the Chief Executive. That is part of Donald's problem. He is never doing the Chief Executive's job. He is instead ALWAY's campaigning. When speaking as the Chief Executive, we on the receiving end cannot accept his comments as frivolous or off the cuff. Why do you think Sean Spicer's comment from the WH press room that we were to accept Trump tweets as official comments from the President was such a significant statement by the WH?

Let’s see..... Hillary or Donald......... tough choice

Because Trump is a bad President in every way possible. The fact that you can't see that is telling and negates anything you say as rubbish.

If you support Donald Trump, on what level do you personally relate to him?

I don’t support him a whole lot. ED primarily, and false flag chemical weapons vs tommohawks secondarily.
I am happy he continues to back the women in Syria fighting for the Syrian Democratic Party.

Kinda like having to choose between syphilis and leprosy, huh?
Thing is, America chose leprosy but still got the syph. And now a man who was elected by a minority has shut down the government and is looking at declaring a national emergency so he can have powers that the elected congress won't give him.
Is this what 'winning' looks like?

Better the devil you don’t know then one you do.

If you don't support him then why can't you just admit he lies when he says he can relate to his base and any attempt for him to act like he does care about them in any significant way is just bull****?

Sorry. Your dear leader is still being a moron himself. Buddying up with someone who propegated the 23 premature baby booted from incubator dealy.

WTF you talking about? This is the second time today you have gone from zero to crazy in two posts, no hablo bot.

It's a protective mechanism. They're in so deep that the less painful recourse is to double down rather than admit they were conned.

This is how con artists get away with their cons for so long. People are too embarrassed to admit they were taken-in lock, stock, and barrel.

Right. Like you could distinguish sanity if it hit you in the face. You asked me to condem President Trump. For some petty bull****.
While bathhouse barry saddles up to Bush junior. Like I’d ever be that nitpicking.

God forbid you say one bad word against someone you claim not to support. lol

Not one bad word. srsly? You can’t read? I will repeat it so even you can understand. ED.
You got that one?
Ghouta Syria.
You get that one too?
Or are you still lost?

Exactly right. Happens everywhere, at all education/experience/wealth levels too.

Best of all, Trump always gives them an out. Rather than have to accept the uncomfortable idea that they were wrong and made a mistake, he just gives them some random, nonsensical excuse and they happily accept that, rather than face the alternative. Selling them a fantasy...not just the big profitable casino fantasy...but also sells them the fantasy that even when they are dreadfully wrong, they are still correct.
