The future of the gop. How do you see it unfolding?

I expected you to beg to differ, those who are most prejudiced tend to find reason to back up why they are prejudiced.
I openly admit I do not care for the current form of the gop. I think they are a cancer growing on america they've gotten so bad with their do anything to win frame of mind. Trump meddled his best in the election and it didn't do him any good. Now all of the republican state controlled legislatures are doing their best to suppress the vote. You are more than welcome to view it another way if you wish. I do not care for people who support insurrection to stop the steal.

Biden has one big problem, the border. The rest is like you say. The possible other problems that could make the party of Trump more attractive are the packing of the SCOTUS and reparations. Independents are against both. This isn't Biden in my opinion, its those Democrats in the congress and 2022 is an election all about congress.

I said cracks, but that is to be expected. Normal ups and downs. Usually anything that happens this year or the the rest of the year will have little to no effect on 2022. Americans have very short memories. That is unless it is something really big that gets independents angry at the party in power. That's always a possibility.
I agree, SCOTUS and reparations are a bad idea in terms of optics

It’ll keep pushing further and further to the Right until it’s an explicitly white supremacist fascist party (as opposed to its current implicit status).

Around that time, the non-insane wing of the Republicans will breakaway and join with establishment, pro-business Democrats to form a new Center-Right party while Progressives leave the reform-resistant Democrats.

The two party system with shift to encompass this new Center-Right neoliberal party and a Progressive democratic socialist party.

Some folks think it's bright, others, not so much. What do you see for the future of the gop in the next eight years?

It depends. If they continue as establishment swamp rats, the GOP will become a weak third party within a decade. If they return to their roots and actually govern according to the principles of their conservative party platform, they will thrive.

It's basically overreaching. That's what kills the democrats. They overreached in the lead up to the 1994 midterms and they were slaughtered. Same in the 2010 midterms. They are doing it again. They never seem to learn.

Unfortunately you are right here I think. The focus should be on immediate practical needs such as COVID with the power balance in DC the way it is currently.

Governing is one of the things the gop does not do very well. I'm starting to think their idea of governing is to consolidate as much power as possible like W did when he was prez.

Are you for real? What do you think the democrats are attempting to do with mass illegal migration over our southern borders, attempting to federalize the election system, and now pushing a bill to add four new SCOTUS justices? I have no use for the establishment swamp rats in either party, however it is the democrats who are attempting to consolidate power.

Until they can kick Trump loose their future will be as the minority party.

Until the democrats can kick loose the Clinton influence, they will always give power right back to the GOP as they did in 1994 and 2010.

You could be right. But there haven't been any Clintons in government since 2013, so...

My guess is that they'll find some fresh idiot candidates, gerrymander, suppress the vote wherever they can, and make a comeback. They will have a hard time finding a more ridiculous and less competent buffoon than Chancellor Squirrelhead, but they'll probably try. Maybe they'll take the DNA from the most dangerous and ridiculous morons of all time, splice them together, and build a super imbecile. You know, kind of like Serpentor or something.

We should start looking forward to a new party, R's are being exposed for the smallness of what they represent.

The border. The border was 'in crisis' when reagan was president. What's new? The border problem has existed for a long, long time and neither party has done anything to solve our immigration problems.

That's not correct that neither party has done anything to improve the issue, both previously and right now. In the 1950's, JFK wrote a pamphlet on immigration reform that was published after his presidency as the book, "A Nation of Immigrants" calling for reform.

In 1965, led by Robert and Edward Kennedy and LBJ, the US passed the Immigration Reform Act of 1965 with large bi-partisan votes. You can read about it in the link below.

By 2007, Edward Kennedy had again led a new immigration reform effort, with the support of some Republicans including Bush, that both parties were split on. This year, Democrats in the House passed an immigration reform bill that Republicans are blocking in the Senate.

Of course, immigration will always be an issue I suspect. There are choices, humanitarian issues, worker visa issues, and people don't agree on what should be done. But it's not correct that neither party has done anything.

Neither will either. The Democrats look at illegals as potential voters, hence they're not willing to stop the flow into this country. Republicans look at illegals as cheap labor, so they aren't willing to do anything productive either. Both parties has their own selfish interests in letting illegals continue to pour into this country.

To say where the Republican Party is headed, look at what it is. Its strength comes from plutocrats who own the party, who fund the propaganda that gets it popular support. It has radicalized to the point of not being in a position to win control of government.

But I think it has a good chance of being viable. Its backers are the wealthiest interests in the country, and it can get power simply by moderating from the radicalism, the trump aberration. Too much of the country doesn't understand how bad its plutocracy is, and would happily support a 'moderate' Republican government. How feasible that is, is shown by how even the worst in history trump came within 43,000 votes of winning.

They will not survive with their current platform (which, coming to think of it, they don't really have, except to say "whatever Donald says"- which is to say, racism and xenophobia). There will always be a need for a conservative party. So my suspicion is that they will eventually find their way again and figure out stuff to say again which is substantive and thoughtful and not consisting of warning us of Jewish space lasers and just cussing out and insulting everyone and alienating them.

I think most Americans would go along with reparations if reparations were given to former slaves and first born generations of former slaves. I highly doubt most Americans would agree with reparations 7 generations after slavery ended. This article covers some of this.

Adding four new justices to the SCOTUS, it has the optics to use your word of the Democrats trying to attain absolute power, absolute control of government and the country. At first when I hear this, I was really upset. But not so much anymore. I'm smart enough, history also shows this, that if the Democrats succeeded in adding four to the SCOTUS, as soon as the Republicans regain power, they'll add six to counter the four the Democrats added. Then the Democrats return to power, they add eight and so it continues. It's called political escalation.

One just has to look at the Democrats first use of the nuclear option, setting the precedence for future use and escalation of it. Reid in his first use didn't include the SCOTUS. But escalation happened when McConnell added the SCOTUS. Had Reid not set the precedence, been the one to first use it, it would have still taken 60 votes for cloture, hence no Kavanaugh, no Barrett. The Democrats have only themselves to blame for the current makeup of the SCOTUS. I was shocked that Reid and company didn't take into consideration that the Republicans would also use the nuclear option when they returned to power. What was he thinking? That the Democrats would retain control from that date until eternity? The same for adding justices to the SCOTUS, the republicans will escalate it big time when they return to power and can do so.

What I would like to see as far as confirming justices to the SCOTUS is a 2/3rds threshold. This would ensure the minority party a say in who is confirmed, it would make at least some of the minority party agree to confirm and it would also eliminate extremist judges from being confirmed. Most federal judges are confirmed by a 80-20 margin or even 90 plus senators voting to confirm them. Perhaps this would eliminate purely political choices for the SCOTUS. To be acceptable to the majority and some of the minority, any nomination would have to be moderate enough to get support. No more party line votes.
