Finally, there's enough critical information on what can and cannot be done for an engineer to come up with a design solution for a Gulf oil fix.
The concept is as simple as putting a cork in a bottle of bubbling wine...
Remove LMRP cap and pipe,
Cut off rest of riser down to BOP Top,
design a steel tube with a tapered end sized to press fit inside the riser,
add an electrical shut off valve,
install an iron ring (1000 pounds) around the tube, weld in place,
drop the assembly down to the BOP on a cable,
press fit the tapered end into the riser inside the top of the BOP by utilizing the 1000 pound extra weight of the iron ring,
shut off the valve with a remote switch.
