A Kurdish militia in northern Syria plans to become autonomous from Damascus in the coming days, after months of administering the border territory without Assad forces, Turkish media reported on Wednesday.

According to the reports, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian affiliate of the PKK terrorist group, announced that it planned to declare autonomy from Syrian government control on July 19, and three months thereafter hold a constitutional referendum. The PYD was said to have met with each of the 10 Kurdish parties operating in northern Syria to discuss the matter, and received popular, but not unanimous, support.

The PYD’s declaration of autonomy came amid reports of intense clashes between the Kurdish group and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra in the northeastern city of Ras al-Ayn. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the clashes took place approximately 200 meters from the Turkish border crossing.

Stray cross-border fire from the battle in Ras al-Ayn late Tuesday night killed one and injured two in the neighboring Turkish city of Ceylanpinar, according to Reuters. A Turkish official told AP, however, that one teen died and two were injured.

I have a lot of Kurdish friends and contacts in the region and I haven't had any corroboration that the Kurdish groups have officially made a declaration of autonomy. It's been rumored for a long time (that it was imminent) but even after the past few days clashes I haven't seen an official statement. There has been a haphazard effort to create the machinery of a defacto state, but the lack of unity between the PYD and KNC has slowed any evolution of the Kurdish position in Syria. Though I think if fighting continues you might finally see the Kurds sweep into Qamshali and sweep the Islamists away. In a localized fight between the Islamists and the Kurds bet heavily on the Kurds.

So Istanbul would be in the "free zone" but Ankara and pretty much the rest of Turkey would be an Islamist state...Hmm. What happens to the "free zone" if the Islamists in Bosnia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, etc. want to be part of the Caliphate too?

US preparing for military action in Syria, top US general says

President Barack Obama is considering using military force in Syria, and the Pentagon has prepared various scenarios for possible United States intervention.

Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Obama administration is deliberating whether or not it should use the brute of the US military in Syria during a Thursday morning Senate hearing.

Gen. Dempsey said the administration was considering using “kinetic strikes” in Syria and said "issue is under deliberation inside of our agencies of government,” the Associated Press reported from Washington.

Last month, the Obama administration concluded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons during the ongoing battles. Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said, “The intelligence community estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from detected chemical weapons attacks in Syria to date; however, casualty data is likely incomplete.”
