While I don't think the Democrats -even if they get control of government in the fall will commit the same political suicide they did in 1994 (more likely the Bannerrhoid efforts will take place in far left states where banning "assault weapons" or increasing the harassment on gun owners won't cost state officials their jobs) if you are worried about a clinton presidency and your ability to own stuff that the Bannerrhoids hate, here is what you do

1) buy 3-4 lower receivers for an AR 15. Anderson makes high quality ones that are often available for under 60 bucks. That is the part that you have to fill out the 4473 on. If you have it in your possession prior to another silly ban, you can configure it anyway you want. You also save money this way since if you buy a complete rifle, the complete rifle is subject to the 11% or so federal excise tax. If you buy the lower receiver only-that is going to be taxed at about 6 dollars. You can buy a top for this receiver through the mail. Same with the lower parts kits. if you don't feel like putting a lower parts kit together, you can buy a complete lower. SPIKES tactical lowers are about 300 dollars and well made. Just make sure you have them before any ban takes place

2) buy a bunch of high quality 30 round magazines. Some of the top quality ones are the famous Magpul Generation 2 or 3. Other really good ones include LANCER and TROY. 15 bucks is about the going rate. Bravo Company and BROWNELLs also sell 10 or 100 packs of mil-spec aluminum mags.

The more people who buy lowers or complete rifles, the better. IT sends a message to the Bannerrhoids and the more AR 15s in circulation, the less able dishonest justices can pretend those type of firearms are not in common use

you can do the same thing for AK pattern rifles though the ability to buy parts kits etc are much tougher. NODAK-SPUD makes the best commercial american receivers IMHO.

Better hurry if you want to get all that done before deer season starts.
