There was a joke on the internet, a meme, about Proud Boys. Three guys thought it would be funny if they dressed up like proud boys and demonstrated.

Antifa saw these three Proud Boys and attacked.

This made the national news.

Membership in the Proud Boys grew, with many new members taking Proud Boys seriously. It wasn't a joke any more. Now the group has thousands of members all over the country.
