The Challenge of Marxism

it is both idealism and pure propaganda that causes younger generations to consider these ideas. Idealism drives much of the BLM movement, the environmental movement, etc. Pure propaganda drives Antifa and some of Trump's extreme supporters.

Yes idealism/propaganda are the vehicle, but the people that are true believers are not driving the car. They are imagining they are driving. It is very sad to see college students ruining their lives by falling victims to whoever is using this for political gain. Whoever controls the masses has the power.

What you fail to realize is that the marxist idea creates dictatorships because you can't fight human DNA in which we are programmed to compete. Although it might sell to the younger generations, some of us know the struggles of life and work. I don't know about you, but I don't work 12-18 hours/day in the private industry to just enjoy a minimalist life.

These ideas are often promoted by individuals that never produced or delivered a service. In the halls of certain academia areas the productivity is ZERO.

The definition of insanity is to try the same thing all over again expecting different results but I am sure you neo-marxists will make it different. All the best to you, the theory is flawed from my point of view.

How ironic that the closer you get to the American right wing, the LESS competition is valued. They love consolidating power into fewer and fewer hands, not encouraging competition. The current head Republican is indicating that he won't leave office if he loses the election. Isn't that how dictatorships begin? Does that mean that the Republicans are Marxists?

No, there is another end of the scale, where competition is also shut down by conservative greed rather than liberal dreams of togetherness. Oh, they are happy to have the poor competing, like rats and roaches, for whatever scraps may trickle down from their stuffed pockets. For themselves, though, as with any criminal organization, they desire cooperation, coordination and, as Trump always demands, loyalty.

Before you spend too much time bemoaning the failures of marxism, consider first the looming fascist tide that threatens to sweep this country into civil war. Quit bitching about the dangers of mosquitos when you've got an elephant on your chest.

Good evening,

As an Eastern European whose family seen the horrors of communism which is based on the ideas of a self-hating drunk, Karl Marx, I found this article one of the best:

The Challenge of Marxism - Quillette

I advise everyone with an IQ over 100 to read the full text.

I might add that this idea of marxism also brings out the reaction of ultra-nationalism that is as toxic.

I will end with a question:

Is it idealism or pure propaganda that drives the younger generations to consider these ideas ?

No one is “considering Marxism” in a serious way. You need to quit listening to the lies of the right-winger Americans.

It is Donald Trump who controls the ignorant masses and it is he who, unfortunately for the nation and the world, who controls the power.

No, people create dictatorships. The Marxist idea does not. A parallel argument would be the idea of democracy creates slavery since slavery has existed in several democracies. But it is people who create and perpetuate slavery, and it is people who create and perpetuate dictatorships.

And I’m no Marxist. But I do not resort to nonsense criticisms of Marxism and find it repugnant when others do so. If you are inclined to criticize Marxism, then criticize Marxism. Do not criticize what isn’t Marxism and erroneously call it Marxism. Of course, I presume you’ve read Marx’s works. After all, to properly criticize Marxism requires one to have read the works upon which the idea is built or received an accurate account by someone who has read it at some point.

Yes, that is also true. Not sure if ignorance is the right word. It is fear that drives the masses to react and every action has an equal reaction. It is like the chicken or the egg question. It is quite irrelevant, fascists ? communists ? How do you know who started it all ? One side loves their country too much, the other hates their country too much. Excesses. All we have is our personal experience and through conversation we can reach to a middle point.

It is a show that has been going on for hundreds and hundreds of years. That is why, the key to freedom is with the individual.

Below are my personal views on this matter. These are all signs of the marxist ideology infiltrating the academia and i did not learn this from propagandists like Limbaugh or Michael Savage, this is experience directly from family. Back in the old country one of the first steps into conquering a society was to allow mediocrity in academia. Others were the factors to climb up the latter.

*Academic merit results from the successful performance of individuals regardless of background.

*Individuals success is no longer considered a reference point for evaluation in universities, only collective traits are now the priority: gender, race, religion, etc.

*The Government is pumping money for people to chase their dream and the average to enter a university it can be as low as 60%.

*Critical thinking is not a priority in universities anymore, professors in social science classes main priority is not to teach but to discredit our Western Civilization.

*There are calls for mathematics itself to be open for interpretation and a sign of a racist culture: Math is Racist: University of Illinois Professor | National Review

*A record number of students favor socialism over capitalism.

The radicals have taken over: Academic extremism comes to Canada - The Globe and Mail

Opinion | A Confession of Liberal Intolerance - The New York Times

It's simple really... Socialism on paper sounds wonderful and when you have teachers and professors advocating for it, to them it's a no brainer.

Younger people will blindly embrace the idea of socialism because a) they lack the life experience necessary to understand human behavior and how it runs counter to the socialist doctrine, and b) they were never taught the history of socialism in school and it's dismal record of world wide failure and human suffering every time it's been implemented.

.
Who are these teachers "advocating" for socialism? There are only four (4) self-described socialist states in the world; Cuba, Laos, China and Vietnam. Anyone seriously believing that the spectre of socialism is looming over America needs to get off conspiracy sites, quit listening to ignorant right-wing media bellowing 'communism!' and join the human race.

Marxism like any ideology, evolves and mutates. The economic marxism battle is over. Eastern Europe proved it. Some people are hard working, some people are lazy and the division leads to chaos. Followers of Karl Marx learnt from this and now they are attempting marxism based on race, gender, academia and other factors. Is an old game with a new name, the biggest lie in history to try to control the sheep. It will never work. Why ? Because each individual is unique and no matter what a professor from Social Studies tell you, that is the reality of it.

That didn't answer my question. I want to see hard evidence that Marxism is being fostered in schools and colleges; not the usual tripe from the uneducated and envious who want to label any well-educated and socially aware person as 'socialist'.

Meanwhile, America continues to be a mix of socialism and crony capitalism just like most developed nations.

Well from an AMERICAN, I can tell you that our most immediate challenge and most threatening challenge is the threat of Autocracy, Marxism ain't even at the bottom of the totem at the moment.

First of all, there hasn't been a regime like those in Eastern Europe since the Wall fell. There are some countries still ruled by a Communist Party, but none of them really have that system anymore, though they still tend to rule with an iron fist. In the US there is no large Marxist party. In Europe there are Social Democratic parties and Democratic Socialists (two different things btw). Many Democratic Socialist parties has their origin in the old Communist parties (though not all of them), when the generation after the Wall fell asked: "what now"? This is for many western European left parties a continuation of the generational struggles in the 80s (when battles raged within the parties between the Pro Moscow Old Guard, and the younger Eurocommunists). The Social Democrats on the other hand has their origin in the parts of the Socialist movements that rejected the USSR after the Russian revolution, thus having never backed the Soviet system to begin with.

The modern left is not at all about the tiresome Marxist- Leninist dogma. Those groups that are, tend to be marginalized. Marx was good at identifying problems but not that great when it came to solutions. And usually when people talk about "Marxists or Marxism", they have a tendency to not actually mean Marxism.

Another mistake many make are saying Socialism = Marxism, which is not correct. Socialism predates Marxism. Though it's fair to say much of left thinking has an origin in Marx but has evolved alot since his time. You don't really hear people talk about the Proletariat and Bourgeois anymore (except the few actual Marxist- Leninists still around, and I sometimes use the terms ironically), which is core to Marx ideology but doesn't work well when explaining the class differences in the post- industrial era.

I understand you want to give individuals fish for one day after which they will continue to starve the next day.

My frame of thinking is to provide the fishing net, the tools so people can fish themselves.

It starts with self confidence and not listening to smart agitators that try to give individuals an excuse for their failures instead of encouraging to succeed.

It comes down to strength of character and independence.
In capitalism you teach people to fish

But the rich control the fishing licenses and you work for them for peanuts

That is a Marxist frame of thinking.

The fishing net is a Means of Production. The person who does the fishing is known as the Proletariat. Marx and Engles' entire point was to give the fishing net to the person who does the fishing.

And then the capitalists come in and control the sale of fishing nets and fishing licenses

Didn't the ideas of Marxism lead to the most authoritative regimes ? It will always ends up there as individuals are unique and competitive.

Hey, tulips! Let's hear more about America's greatest threat, tulips!

Almost the entire role of tulips in US politics is to distract from the evil of the actual system being used to attack the American people, plutocracy.

I recently posted a thread showing that without our plutocratic policies, the average American worker would be making $42,000 more. What better way, apparently, to get Americans to not understand and oppose that, than to tell them that the real danger is tulips, and the plutocrats are the only alternative?

Actual tulips as they have been tried are a bad system, and have basically no relevance to American politics, except as propaganda to get people to worry about that instead of the actual issues. And the result has been a return to record inequality in the US, after decades of greatly reduced inequality beginning with FDR. Reagan put the US on the road to plutocracy and massive debt.

The OP clearly does not have much understanding of the issues, which is all too common with people obsessed with communism.

I have previously posted why "capitalism" and "communism" are false labels for the issues, and prevent people understanding the issues, and better labels for the US are "Democratic capitalism" and "Plutocratic capitalism".

In other words, the only 'foundation' for a US economic system is a form of capitalism, but there are big differences between a Democratic version, with more power and a larger share of wealth for everyone, less inequality and more growth, and Plutocratic capitalism, in which a few have nearly all the wealth and power, resulting in a lot of poverty, and lower growth - a smaller pie, and a war on democracy.

But just try to actually inform the people obsessed with communism about that. So, sadly, too many do not understand the real issues. But hey, they think, we're not like Stalinist Russia so it's great!

Bernie, inequality is largely due to the fact that Artificial Intelligence and automation is starting to be used by many business. Of course this would cause inequality, as the union worker is used to getting a fat cheque, benefits for doing blue collar work. The self serve option at fast foods created a lot of unemployment. What is the solution ? The solution is to learn and adapt, not to cry to the government for money, not to protest and be brainwashed by agitators for so called social issues but to fight to achieve as an individual.

Sorry but that's a lot bullsh*t. A strong social safety net is the best way to get back on your feet. If you don't have to worry about not making rent or not afford to eat, or not afford to get medical help if you need it, you'll much easier find a new job or be able to school yourself to another profession.
