One party controls the White House and the Senate by less than the margin needed to end a filibuster, and the other party controls the House by a wide margin. A fundamental conflict over government spending is at the heart of an impasse that leads to a shutdown of the federal government.
The year is not 2013 but 1981 . . . and 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1987. That’s right, the Reagan years, when President Ronald Reagan and House Speaker Tip O’Neill would work things out and avoid having to close the Washington Monument. With all due respect to Chris Matthews and other purveyors of this narrative popular in today’s Washington, the reality was quite different. eace

I don't remember the Democratic Senate leader taking the podium the day Reagan was inaugurated and claiming that the Dems' entire legislative goal was to make Reagan a one-term president, and then that party doing everything in their power (and failing) to make that a reality. It was a different time back then.

The founding father of the USA said that no foreign nation would ever be capable of taking down the USA. And you know what, they were right. Smart people. It's ****ing Congress and the uninformed, idiotic US electorate that will be taking down their own country (I repeat, the uninformed idiotic electorate, not the people who are informed and make rational decisions and know what they're talking about in terms of policy, but those people are apparently a small % of the population else who the hell would elect the old congress with 90% of the same people in it).

One thing that was really different back then: The President of the USA didn't have to deal with a House of Representatives controlled by some people who refuse to accept the fact that the man in the White House won the election last November.

It's hard to talk with people who refuse to accept reality.

We'll see who the American people place most of the blame on for this kerfuffle in the not-distant future.

There are three branches of government. It's Congress who writes the laws and appropriates the money, not Obama.

Obama's job is not to dictate through executive order but to enforce those laws passed by Congress and to over see those departments of government spend the money that Congress has appropriated as it's suppose to be.

Obama has been derelict as POTUS. He has refused to uphold the oath of office that he had to take twice in 2013. He has ignored what parts of the Constitution that he doesn't like. And worse of all, nobody is in charge, Obama has surrounded himself with second rate people.

This is so often misrepresented. There was no 'podium' but rather was said during a 'sit down' interview. Further the balance of MM's statement is often omitted:

Partially because of of the best efforts of the MSM, I don't think the endlessly name calling, endlessly swearing and ridiculing Liberals realize how much America and the American people are blaming them and blaming Obama for the present disastrous condition of our once beautiful country.

If they believe they are, and will remain, unscathed by what they have done to our country, they are very much mistaken.
