We impose sanctions on Iran because they're a socialist country, not because of "human rights violations." We don't impose sanctions on Saudi Arabia and their human rights record is far worse that Iran's and they're our "allies."

The very strict regime ruling the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is consistently ranking among the "worst of the worst" in Freedom House's annual survey of political and civil rights. Saudi Arabia is one of approximately thirty countries in the world with judicial corporal punishment. In Saudi Arabia's case this includes amputations of hands and feet for robbery, and flogging for lesser crimes such as "sexual deviance" and drunkenness. In the 2000s, it was reported that women were sentenced to lashes for adultery; the women were actually victims of rape, but because they could not prove who the perpetrators were, they were deemed guilty of committing adultery. Saudi Arabia engages in capital punishment, including public executions by beheading. The death penalty can be imposed for a wide range of offences including murder, rape, armed robbery, repeated drug use, apostasy, adultery, homosexuality, witchcraft and sorcery and can be carried out by beheading with a sword stoning or firing squad followed by crucifixion. Torture and other ill-treatment of detainees is common, widespread and generally committed with impunity. Reported methods included beating, suspension by the limbs and sleep deprivation. Those tortured reportedly included detained protesters, who were held incommunicado for days or weeks without charge or trial. Single men and women are not allowed to share the same social space. Women cannot travel alone without a specific form or an electronic authorization. This ban is only lifted when a woman turns 45. Women under 45 must either travel with a husband or father or else hold a permission form signed by a male guardian.

Iran isn't really a socialist country, you know?

Your calling Iran--- a country with the word "Islamic" in its name---a socialist state. Lol good one.

Human rights ..

Some nations, ours for one, are ''''hopeful'''' , others are ''''hopeless'''' , Saudi Arabia as an example . Or , any Islamic nation ..or any conservative nation for that matter .. I think that Iran is ''''hopeful''''.
Then, of course, are we talking about human rights - 2016 OR human rights 1916 ?

1. Oil. Saudi Arabia was the driving force behind the 9/11 attacks. Frankly it's a disgrace that we even give them the time of day.
2. Iran wasn't totalitarian, and wasn't governed under shariah law until we overthrew their leaders and instilled shahs more sympathetic to western powers. You reap what you sow.

*I* don't care about human rights in other countries. It is the responsibility of the people within those countries to rise up against the oppressive regimes and both achieve and maintain whatever rights they want to have within their own cultures and societies. Most of these countries are the way that they are because the majority of citizens want them to be that way. It isn't my job and certainly not the job of my government to go around and tell others what they ought to be like or what they ought to want. If they want to ask us for help in achieving their aims, fine, but it is not America's job to run the worldwide human rights cakewalk.

That's not surprising. Conservatives are more tribalistic.

This has nothing to do with tribalism, it has to do with rights. They have as much right to determine how they live as we do. Everyone is responsible for the government that they have. We have no say in how other nations run themselves, so long as how they run themselves doesn't directly affect us.

Of course it doesn't.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow foreskin amputation (the foreskin being the most sexually sensitive part of the penis) to be perpetrated upon over half of the male babies born in the country.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the detainment of most of the country's minors for seven hours per day, nor the enslavement of those same minors with homework.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the continued sale of SSRIs, which, in sufficiently high dosage, cause irreversible and severe damage the neurons that are responsible for sexual pleasure.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the long imprisonment of minors without a trial or commission of a crime.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow jet airplanes to repeatedly take off next to residential areas, which is an act of psychological torture.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow violations of suicide rights in any prisons, jails, or hospitals.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the force-feeding of food or drugs via nasogastric tubes.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the forced shaving of prisoners' heads.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the kidnapping of innocent minors right off of the street by badge-wearing sociopaths.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the taser-torture of people for mere disobedience to the badge-wearing dominance-asserting sociopaths.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow the imprisonment of people for merely carrying a concealed firearm or knife without a privacy-violating license, or owning a sawed-off long gun without a license, or possessing recreational drugs, or possessing a syringe without a medical licence, or practicing medicine without having obtained a super-expensive MD, or driving without a driver license or vehicle registration, or wearing a mask in public, or making a benign lie to a federal agent, or disobeying an order from a badge-wearing dominance-asserting sociopath.

Since the U.S. government clearly doesn't want to stop the human rights abuses in its own country, and in many cases actively perpetrates such abuses, then it sure as hell doesn't want to stop the human rights abuses in other countries, such as Saudi Arabia.

We'd be living in a very different world if America didn't care about human rights.

The government usually cares, some gaps here and there, but it usually cares. This is also excluding utilitarian decisions that proved strategic for the greater good such as some covert actions during the Cold War.

If the U.S. government gave a damn about human rights, then they would not allow jet airplanes to repeatedly take off next to residential areas, which is an act of psychological torture.

Lmao.

Sharia in Iran came after our boy the Shah was taken out, so yeah....

The Shah's Iran was authoritarian, not totalitarian.

Definitely -- USA has the highest incarceration rate in the World.

I disagree 100%. Criminalizing Judaism and Islam would be a great human rights violation. That was already done in Spain 1492 -- The Spanish Inquisition.

What the hell are you talking about? The vast majority of foreskin-amputators in the U.S. are not jews or muslims, and you know it, nor are judaism or islam comprised solely of foreskin amputation, but have numerous other aspects, and you know it, and judaism and islam can be slightly modified so as to practice voluntary adult self-amputation, and you know it. Furthermore, non-consensual foreskin amputation is not even a real religious policy, but a tyrannical ideological policy that is masquerading as a religious one; true religious policies consist of things that people do voluntarily. And even banning judaism and islam is a far cry from the spanish inquisition, which was about forcing people to accept christianity, and torturing people into confession, conversion, and implicating others.

Saying that upholding the fundamental human right of genital integrity is itself a violation of human rights that is comparable to the spanish inquisition is probably the most extreme and willfully insane act of libel that I have ever witnessed, an act of libel so extreme that the only just punishment for it is for you, and any others who perpetrate it, to be subjected to perpetual agony for the remainder of your life. But then of course, one could counter that by saying: "is that not itself a violation of human rights?". It is not, because it is a punishment that is proportionate to the magnitude of your innate chronic truth-disrupting intent, and the magnitude of your consequent libel against good deeds and the people who do or support them, and the magnitude of the injustices that that libel is intended to perpetuate, as opposed to being an infliction of suffering upon an innocent, or an excessive punishment for an offense that does not warrant it.

It is sad that many people are interested in outlawing a fundamental Jewish and Muslim practice. Criminalizing circumcision is a declaration of war on Jews and on Muslim world -- with 1.7 billion[/url] adherents.

Iran isn't a socialist country. And they're sanctioned becaus of the nuclear issue, it has nothing to do with their legal system.

P.S. The Saudi government is a great one.

Yet the second you suggest female circumcision, a practice common in the Muslim world, people lose their ****.

Explain that.

If mutilating your children is essential to your faith then maybe you need to get a new faith. Regardless, the US has already crossed that bridge when they banned female circumcision. The idea that your faith can protect you from such horrible acts is not going to fly in the courts.

What would you have the US to do about the above alleged human rights violations in Saudi Arabia if it were to care about human rights there?

Female circumcision is absolutely vile!!

Female circumcision is absolutely vile!!

Not disagreeing with you. All circumcision is vile. But thinking you have an imaginary friend in the sky telling you cut off parts of children's genitalia doesn't make it any less vile.

And so is male circumcision.

I advise against this also but if someone told me they were going to have their daughters clit cut off I'd punch them in the face..
