We use Nomorobo, which intercepts telemarketers calls. You only hear one ring. Yesterday the phone kept ringing so I picked it up. The woman on the phone new at least my name & phone number & somehow knew I had an Amazon account. She asked me if I had made a $300+ purchase that morning, which I had not. She asked me if I wanted to talk to a tech support person. I said yes & I was immediately connected to a call center somewhere in India from the guy's heavy Indian accent.

I've watched enough telephone scam vides on YouTube that I knew right away that I wasn't going to be headed for anything pleasant by continuing this conversation so I callded him a scammer & hung up.

Checking my Amazon account, there was no transaction as they had reported. This confirmed that this had been an attempted scam call.

Funny, because I just got a call from someone that said my ATT account qualifies for 50% off. (I had blocked the number because I don't answer calls when I don't know who it is, but they left a voicemail). Contacted ATT, and sure enough - a scam. They've been hearing from a lot of people about it.

Your name and phone number (landline?) are generally publically available. They didn't know you had an Amazon account, they were cold reading/riding the good odds.

There are several guys on YouTube who torture & bust the Indian scammers.
