If they're going to steal property, then they should at least spend it on something that is really needed.

like perhaps more prison space for the "war on drugs" so they don't have to let car thieves out of jail three or four times before they're finally taken off the streets temporarily.

Margarita machines and tequila arent a necessity?:thinking

This money should be used to pay for equipment, training, or future missions. Not **** that has nothing to do with police work. This money should be treated like tax payer dollars(maybe thats a bad suggestion considering how clowns in office spend out tax dollars).
In my opinion the money/valuables shouldn't be taken to begin with with no conviction, but if we absolutely "have to"*, then at the very least is should go into the local jurisdiction's general fund and distributed from their according to the needs and desires of the locals. At least then, there wouldn't be the direct profit motive for the LE agencies themselves.

*-We don't have to, but I'm playing the game here for the sake of conversation.

Aaarrrgh! Asset forfeiture is such a scam, one of the most insidiously vile manipulations of the law that has come out of the War on Drugs.

It is pure theft, and a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment too. Simply by being arrested for a drug offense authorizes the police to retain all your assets; money, vehicle, and other property you are in, on, or is in your possession at the time of the arrest. That is anything they can claim was related to the drug crime allegedly being committed at the time of arrest.

They retain it all even if all charges are dropped or dismissed! I heard of relatives losing their homes if some kid is found with drugs in their basement or room. No one seems to care.

The practice should be scrapped nationwide, and this should be done by federal law.

With civil asset forfeiture (slightly different from criminal asset forfeiture), it's even worse than you state. You don't have to be arrested nor do you have to be charged. They can just take it.

Love your first sentence, btw.

This is why it should be changed to where it has to be proven in a criminal court of law that those assets/money were gained through illegal means.Civil asset forfeiture should be illegal and treated as theft period due to the lower standards in a civil trial needed to prove guilt.
