Dave Chappelle had some guy storm the stage and attack him. Article seems to say that it was some sort of response to his "trans" comments. But, I don't see where that was established.

That said, this appears to be the sign of the times. We have reached a point where people are getting overly upset by words. What is causing this? Is it actually worse than before, or is this being highlighted more now?

Nowadays, people seem to think they are entitiled to "safe spaces" where nobody ever says anything they find offensive. If they are in the US, they are in the Wrong Country for their sensitivities. Emigrate!!!

Where is anyone on the right saying gays, trans, people of color or other religions don't have free speech?

What are you on about?

What sorts of rights, exactly? Specify.

Free speech? Because, your post responded to someone commenting that people need "safe spaces" protected from other people's ideas.

You responded that the right was "scared" of gay, trans, etc.

Even if they are "scared" of gay and trans people, or whatever, that doesn't infringe on anyone's rights, certainly not their free speech. It's the Left that demands "safe spaces" and claim that the political or social opinions of others must be silenced. If a devout Muslim doesn't like gay people because it's a grave sin in Islam, that doesn't infringe anybody's rights, just like when a Muslim says that worshiping Jesus as God is among the most serious sins in Islam - it's just an idea, it doesn't infringe on the rights of Christians. The reverse is also true, Christians who think Islam is a false religion, that's not an infringement on anybody's rights. So, even if a right winger says gay people are committing sins, or transwomen are just men who think they're women, etc., that doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.

It's really pretty ridiculous to get all worked up over a joke. It's like comedy road rage.

I almost suspect our society has been infected by some disease, or somebody put something in the water. This amount of ridiculousness from the Left is unbearable, and I've never seen it before in my long life. The amount of "offense" taken at every turn, man - I sure am glad there wasn't a video camera going day to day when I was in college. I think the average Progressive of today would pass out cold from five minutes of listening to life in 1987. lol

What I don't understand is why someone would go to see Chapelle in the first place if they don't like his humor. He's been around long enough to know what to expect.
These are people who go to the show precisely because they don't like the subject matter of the humor. They have come to believe they have a right to shut other people up. That's today's American Left.

Anybody who is offended by comedy is an asshole. Don't go, don't watch, and STFU. The fact that some people can't laugh at the toughness of life, probably explains why they are such miserable pricks.

A comedian makes jokes, and everything is fair game in comedy. Don't watch if you don't like comedy

Do you not remember the same-sex marriage debate?

Anyone pretending the right didn't fight tooth and nail against same-sex marriage is not being honest and therefore not worth debating in terms of presenting evidence.

It's not the comedy the Left has a problem with. It's with the opinions they disagree with.

Just being honest, I am a flawed person. If you want to say something bad about me, have at. If you do about my family, expect repercussions.

Even Mike Tyson said that social media has gotten people comfortable with saying insulting things without getting punched in the face. I kinda agree.

Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Now you've heard it, not shouted in a crowded theatre admittedly as I realize I seem now to have shouted it in the Hogwarts dining room but the point is made. Everyone knows the fatuous verdict of the greatly over-praised justice Oliver Wendell Holmes who asked for an actual example of when it would be proper to limit speech or define it as an action, gave that to shouting fire in a crowded theatre. Its very often forgotten what he was doing in that case, was sending to prison a group of Yiddish speaking socialists whose literature was printed in a language most Americans couldn't read opposing President Wilson's participation in the First World War and the dragging of the United States into this sanguinary conflict which the Yiddish speaking socialists had fled from Russia to escape. In fact it could be just as plausibly argued that the Yiddish speaking socialists, who were jailed by the excellent and over-praised judge Oliver Wendell Holmes, were the real fire-fighters - were the ones who were shouting fire when there really was fire in a very crowded theatre indeed, and who is to decide?

....a short refresh of course in the classic texts on this matter, which are: John Milton's "Areopagitica", Areopagitica being the great hill of Athens, for discussion and free expression; Thomas Paine's introduction to "the Age of Reason"; and I would say John Stewart Mill's essay On Liberty, in which it is variously said...

'll be very daring, and summarize all three of these great gentlemen of the great tradition of especially English liberty in one go: what they say is: Its not just the right of the person who speaks to be heard, it is the right of everyone in the audience to listen and to hear, and every time you silence somebody you make yourself a prisoner of your own action because you deny yourself the right to hear something. In other words your own right to hear and be exposed is as much involved in all these cases as is the right of the other to voice his or her view. Indeed as John Stewart Mill said, if all of society were agreed on the truth and beauty and value of one proposition, all except one person it would be most important in fact it would become even more important that that one heretic be heard because we would still benefit from his perhaps outrageous or appalling view.

In more modern times this has been put I think best by a personal heroine of mine Rosa Luxemburg, who said that "the freedom of speech is meaningless unless it means the freedom of the person who thinks differently". My great friend John O'Sullivan, former editor of the National Review and I think probably my most conservative and reactionary Catholic friend, once said as a tiny thought experiment he said: "If you hear the Pope saying he believes in God you think well the Pope's doing his job again today. If you hear the Pope saying he's really begun to doubt the existence of God you begin to think he might be on to something".

Well, if everybody in North America is forced to attend a school training in sensitivity or in Holocaust awareness and is taught to study the final solution, about which nothing was actually done by this country or North America or the United Kingdom while it was going on but lets say as if in compensation for that everyone's made to swallow an official and unalterable story of it now and it's taught as the great moral exemplar the great modern equivalent of the morally lacking elements of the Second World War a way of stilling our uneasy conscience about that combat, if that's the case with everybody as it more or less is and one person gets up and says, "You know what, this Holocaust? I'm not sure it even happened. In fact, I'm pretty certain it didn't. Indeed I begin to wonder if the only thing is that the Jews brought a little bit of violence on themselves". That person doesn't just have a right to speak, that person's right to speak must be given extra protection because what he has to say must have taken him some effort to come up with.

Might be, might contain, a grain of historical truth. Might in any case give people to think about why do they know what they already think that they know? How do I know that I know this, except that I've always been taught this and never heard anything else? It's always worth establishing, first a principle, saying "What would you do if you met a flat Earth society member?" "Come to think of it, how can I prove the Earth is round?" "Am I sure about the theory of evolution? I know it's supposed to be true. Here's someone who says no such thing, it's all intelligent design". "How sure am I in my own views?" Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus and the feeling that whatever you think you're bound to be okay because you're in the safely moral majority.

You people want to go on stage and attack comedians, and you create arbitrary rules about comedy like "you should punch up, not punch down" (and then conveniently place yourselves on the "down" side). You create stupid concepts like "microaggressions" and claim that if someone says "hey where are you from, originally?" it's some sort of stoning offense. You folk create ridiculous ideas like "cultural appropriation" and demand that white people stop making and selling tacos and enchiladas. Your side claims the entire world is sexist, and you claim that all white people are racist, while embracing absurd and racist concepts like "critical race theory" - your people overwhelmingly support socialism and oppose capitalism - and you bitch and moan every two seconds about someone "erasing your identity" and how screwing up someone's made-up pronouns causes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder....lol...

...and you have the nerve to suggest anyone else bitches and whines? STFU and GTFO. LOL

The same people that shit themselves over jokes about trans people would laugh at jokes regarding other people. **** them. Grow the **** up. Seriously...until they learn how to love themselves...EVERYTHING will be an insult. At some point maybe they will realize that the person they hate and loathe is NOT the comedian telling jokes...its that guy that stares back at them from the mirror.
