"that" ?

A friend of mine has to pass an English exam in a few days, and he asked me if he has to use "that" after the verb "to tell".

For example:

"I told him (that) I have to go"

I don't think the "that" is necessary, but are there some cases where it is needed?

I'd say it's not nessecary, it would be nessecary if the sentence was.

the difference would be

i told him that i had to go
i told him "i had to go"

one is a direct quote of what was said, the other is a general idea, or something like that.
