In yet another assault on trans rights, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is ordering an investigation into families of trans kids, conflating the actual affirming services that are available to minors with surgical and hormonal procedures available only to adults.
In a letter to the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services, Abbott said that he has been able to affirm that a variety of health care services that transgender individuals may seek are illegal under Texas law when provided to minors. He listed numerous options that are available only to adults, along with a few that are available at or before puberty.

Announcing the decision publically, Abbott said that doctors, nurses, teachers, and all other mandated reporters in the state are obligated to contact protective services for an investigation into any family with a child who “may be subject” to these treatments, and warns of criminal penalties for failing to do so.
In short, the order pushes the government into the homes and lives of trans kids and their families, and forces other adults in their lives, who could be trusted confidants, to instead police their gender and the affirmation these kids are receiving from families and health professionals.
