A CHILDREN’S SPEECH PATHOLOGIST who has worked for the last nine years with developmentally disabled, autistic, and speech-impaired elementary school students in Austin, Texas, has been told that she can no longer work with the public school district, after she refused to sign an oath vowing that she “does not” and “will not” engage in a boycott of Israel or “otherwise tak[e] any action that is intended to inflict economic harm” on that foreign nation. A lawsuit on her behalf was filed early Monday morning in a federal court in the Western District of Texas, alleging a violation of her First Amendment right of free speech.

The child language specialist, Bahia Amawi, is a U.S. citizen who received a master’s degree in speech pathology in 1999 and, since then, has specialized in evaluations for young children with language difficulties (see video below). Amawi was born in Austria and has lived in the U.S. for the last 30 years, fluently speaks three languages (English, German, and Arabic), and has four U.S.-born American children of her own.

The language of the affirmation Amawi was told she must sign reads like Orwellian — or McCarthyite — self-parody, the classic political loyalty oath that every American should instinctively shudder upon reading:

What does BDS have to do with helping developmentally disabled children in Texas? They've been quietly sneaking their agenda into state laws around the country. The first time I became aware of this was in Nikki Haley's South Carolina, where legislation made it illegal to support BDS on college campuses. Haley is a shameless employee of Israel, and will likely collect millions of dollars from the global tentacles that do Israel's bidding in the USA.

Will any of Israel's supporters be brave enough here to support the firing of Bahia Amawi for refusing to pledge support for a foreign country? Under which grounds should she be fired?

Nice window onto how our freedoms are being systematically removed by government, a problem that nowhere near enough people care about.

I was all ready for this to be a story about a private school and was prepared to say, “well, it is a private school. They can do tha if they want.”

So I was a bit taken aback that it was a public school. WTF?! What were they thinking? Let’s hope the courts set this straight ASAP.

BDS is a racist movement that should be compared with other racist movements.
A sppech pathologist not willing to declare that she will not cooperate with a KKK agenda would be a good example.

That is bizarre. It is Texas though. I got nothin though, no idea how this even would become a thing.

I support the firing. Yay school.

Yeah, it is Texas. But it is also Austin, which is pretty liberal. But maybe the school district isn’t.

Why do I get the feeling that if a teacher was fired for not agreeing to boycott Israel, that would go unquestioned.

So you support public schools being able to tell their employees what political positions they can support?

Does Israel make it's teachers sign a pledge to not support the KKK here? WTF do our teachers have to do with Israel and BDS?

If there is a real reason I would like to hear it I really don't know much on the subject of Israel.

When it's racism they support and the public school is supposed to be against that, don't you?

Which race is BDS discriminatory against?

A sppech pathologist not willing to declare that she will not cooperate with a KKK agenda would be a good example.

You've just posited the dumbest false equivalency ever presented on DP.

Who knows, you get all sorts of stupid feeling that are usually divorced from reality.

I wouldn't be surprised if an Israeli school fired a staff member for not agreeing to say he doesn't support the KKK.

Your opinion as one who promotes the same type of racism is dully noted.

While you promote fantasies you're too scared to elaborate on.

Fantasies is an ironic term when used by someone promoting the most surreal antisemitic theories.

Opposing the policies of a nation’s government is not racist. Are we racist for sanctioning Zimbabwe?

My firm answer is maybe, like if a teacher was a supporter of the KKK or picketed soldiers funerals in their off time, I’d be hard pressed to care too much.

Who knows, you get all sorts of stupid feeling that are usually divorced from reality.

And yet, I’m never proven wrong. What if a teacher was a global warming skeptic and was fired for that. Would you take any issue with that?

A woman in my country who performs a much needed service for developmentally disabled children lost her job due to Zio-fascism. This is no fantasy.

Yes. Although 2 completely different things. We are talking about a pledge to support a different country. Why would anyone ever have to do that?

But in those cases the teacher could have minority students or students with military families. I can see the rational.

This seems different. And it isn’t because I oppose Israel’s policies. I would also think it was wrong to fire a teacher for supporting the Israeli government. Assuming they keep their pro or anti-Israeli government opinions out of the classroom.

And yet, I’m never proven wrong.

If you think your support of Israel is appreciated, you're dead wrong. And if you want to debate that, I have some Pew Research to show you that proves you're wrong.
