Agreed, Tesla is currently lacking scale in this space, which is why they picked Austin. It's the only sort of place where they can enjoy a decent ODD.

A light fog or rain and these vehicles will grind to a halt.

Waymo has been doing this for years now. Why is the future "now"? It's yesterday.

Tesla is just starting the long road of proving that their cars can operate safely autonomously. And this road is perilous. It just takes one terrible accident to get shut down.

Moreover, taxis are only worth it in big cities full of liberals who hate Tesla. Tesla robotaxis are dead on arrival. They will also be huge targets for activists who already attack Teslas.

Yeah, this is all rather anti-climactic given that Waymo has already had this operationalized at scale and running superbly for a couple of years now.

Meanwhile Tesla still doesn't have a LIDAR option.

Probably. The Tesla brand has suffered an enormous blow. It may not ever recover.
Musk will still be rich, but has an awful lot of scorn heaped against him.
People do vote with their wallets. I will never knowingly put another dollar in Musk's pocket - and I am an existing (power) customer. Never again.
The product (solar panels and power walls) is fine, excellent even. But there are others out there.

He has lost our household for life as well. Between his attitude and toddler-like behavior, Tesla's stale product mix and many really attractive EV options on the market, I feel no desire to ever own another Tesla product.
 
I hope that Tesla eventually rids itself of its edgelord troll mascot. He's a deal killer for a number of people.
