What a horrible tragedy.A press conference was held, key points:
# of the 9 dead victims, 6 were female and 3 male.
# 12 victims are still in critical condition, so the death toll could rise.
# the dead perpetrator is a 21-year old former male student of the high school, who lived in the Graz-suburbs district and who owned both weapons he used legally (he had a valid firearm license). He used a handgun and a rifle in the attack. Since you have to be at least 21 years of age in Austria to get a firearm license, he didn't have the legal license and firearms for a long time. Maybe he bought it just a few weeks or months ago, for the attack. He also had no previous criminal record, otherwise he wouldn't have received a firearm license in the first place. You also have to pass a psychiatrist exam before getting the license.
# the perpetrator is of Austrian citizenship.
It seems kinda crazy to me that you would go to your former school and shoot up people there, especially if you are leaving that school at 18 and all your former bullies are also already out of that school (except former teachers).
And just like that: Austria will successfully ban firearms to all. Like how a civilized nation should work.
During a background briefing, Colonel Kurt Kornberger, commander of the Cobra South task force, provided further details on the alert for the shooting spree in Graz:
According to the information, the perpetrator fired for no longer than 13 minutes. The alert for a possible shooting spree was raised at 10:00 a.m., and six minutes later, emergency personnel arrived at the school. According to Kornberger, patrols were in the building at 10:08 and 10:09 a.m., respectively. It was noticeably quiet. "We didn't hear any more gunshots," he said. In the foyer, Cobra officers encountered a teacher who said he had contact with the perpetrator on the third floor. The emergency personnel then discovered seriously injured and dead people in a classroom on that floor. The officers then searched the nearest rooms and found the perpetrator, who had committed suicide, in the restroom at 10:13 a.m. The first paramedics were then dispatched to the severely damaged classroom to treat the injured. At 10:17 a.m., further searches were conducted to ensure there were no other perpetrators. At 10:21 a.m., the first rescue personnel, including paramedics, arrived at the school. Meanwhile, police searched the entire building, every room, every cupboard. At 10:28 a.m., the building was cleared.
Van der Bellen suggested amending the gun laws: "If we come to the conclusion that the gun laws need to be changed, then we will do so." He also previously told journalists: "Politicians will certainly examine how it is possible for a 21-year-old to own handguns and long guns and have the opportunity to purchase the appropriate ammunition and cause this havoc. It will be necessary to examine whether the legal situation truly meets modern requirements. The question is how to reduce the likelihood of such murders."
