Statement below perfectly illustrates the American gun obsession (psychosis) run amok.

Teachers should not be our last line of defense. They should be teaching not strategizing what to do during an armed assault like freaking Green Berets.

This is all the result of the NRA dream of everyone having easy access to guns. Look at the havoc that has wrought.

No, this is the result of violent, mentally ill people having access to guns. It's already illegal for violent, mentally ill people to own a gun, but (as we all know) you don't have to own a gun to use one. If we had done a better job identifying these people and putting them away for everyone's safety (including their own), there would never have been a Sandy Hook or Virginia Tech and many more mass shootings.

That (bolded above) would require due process (aka a court order) - something that now results in even those convicted of a violent crime not remaining incarcerated and/or institutionalized.

Oh, of course they are allowed due process. Violent people shouldn't be allowed back into society. People whose crimes had no victims aren't the ones who should be taking up a spot in prison.

Keep in mind that John Hinkley Jr., who tried to assassinate the POTUS, who was found not guilty (but insane) was released (after 35 years).

Strangely, even if guns were banned tomorrow, people would still be getting shot on a regular basis.

No, this is the result of children hating radical leftwingers who demand that no one be able to protect children in school - a posting signs to inform all that the children are defenseless by government order. Look at the success by advertising for shooting children promising government protection.

Yes, like I said, "This is all the result of the NRA dream of everyone having easy access to guns."

Thanks for confirming, albeit unwittingly.

Don't blame schools or the kids for what loons with guns do. Don't we have police to take care of active shooters or are they all busy with traffic stops?

just because you have speed limits does not mean you can’t have traffic lights.

Teachers don't want to teach. Hard to get shot sitting on the beach in Rio.

And who do you want to be the determining entity on putting them away? Remember, you are literally saying they needed to be incarcerated (not necessarily in prison) for their own safety. What laws did they break previously to be "put away"? Do we really want to set the precedence of "I think you're crazy, but you haven't committed a crime so we should lock you up"?

Many of the mass shooters, while they displayed bizarre behavior sometimes, did not rise to the level of putting them away.

You might be one of those folks who holds a kid in front of yourself to protect you while the shooting is going on. Such manly men when they have a firearm in their hands.

Yes, teachers should be teachers and not wondering around the halls armed to teeth looking like we are out in early west Texas.

However this issue is not that simple, and the NRA is a dying organization.

This issue we have with our gun culture / 2nd Amendment debate cannot be reduced to what is happening in schools alone, even though I agree that our kids should not live in fear being at school.

Now show where the NRA says it wants violent, mentally ill people allowed to own guns.

Yes, I know many didn't rise to that level. I'm talking about the ones who did.

It's not "I THINK you're crazy". It would be "I KNOW you're crazy." A pattern of violent and disturbing behavior should result in a team of doctors suggesting to the courts that the person should be locked away for his/her safety and others' safety. Adam Lanza should have been institutionalized. James Holmes should've been institutionalized. Seung-Hui Cho should've been institutionalized. At the very least, they should've had mandatory regular psychiatric assessments and been closely monitored by their doctors.

That would be Senator Cruz, and you must have meant Cancun.

Dishonestly loaded question, but here ya go.

Obviously, lobbying against laws to stop something is the same as "wanting" it.

Teachers shouldn't fear being shot, period. They're far more likely to be killed by a drunk or leadfoot driver on the way home from school than they are to be shot by a random shooter in their school.

They aren’t lobbying to stop laws against violent mentally ill people from buying firearms. They agree with those laws. They disagree that EVERYONE should be subject to strict gun control laws.

Strangely, even if guns were banned tomorrow, people would still be getting shot on a regular basis.

Not to the extend they are now. Gun violence in this country is almost silly if it wasn’t killing so many of our citizens.

How will background checks stop violent mentally ill people from getting guns, if we don't do anything to identify who is violently mentally ill? How many teachers have been shot because a violently mentally ill person was able to get a gun without a background check, even though the fact of that person being violently mentally ill would have been flagged by a background check?

And if Dems wanted actual background checks (not registration) so bad, why didn't they compromise with Republicans in 2013 to pass them, and why aren't they doing so now?

That's why I think these lockdown drills need to stop going at it the way they have been. No more of this stopping class, turning the lights off, and hiding in the corner. Even older students are going to get traumatized by that. Just lock the classroom door and keep on teaching. Ruining education is what these shooters probably want.

Agreed. As bad as school shootings suck, both sides are making too much out of them. I almost have a sense that all the attention being heaped on them makes them more likely to happen, like it's giving the nutjobs in the school the idea to do it.
