Hey guys id just thought id drop by and say hi…. My name is Ryan im 23 and live in London (UK) I’m starting work as a teacher in September and will be teaching a subject called citizenship to GSCE students (aged around 14 – 16) which covers topics such as politics sociology and religion , so I thought I’d drop by this place to see for my self what young people have to say on the current issues of the day so that I can be more intone with what matters to my students.

I love political debate and try to be as objective as possible, but I must confess to being very leftward leaning. In the last political debate forums I have frequented I have tried to start threads that are innovative and thought provoking and help people approach topics from new and fresh perspectives. Im gonna try and do the same on this forum. If you want to know any more about me add me to your MSN or check out the link in my signature…

I look forward to getting to know you all, Libertine xXx

A teacher? In London?! Your a braver man than I am, don't forget your stab vest.;)

I must confess I'm very sceptical about the content and validity of 'citizenship' studies given the prevalence of political correctness in Britain today, can't help thinking it's the government trying to create the illusion of the control it so clearly lacks. Good luck with the job anyway, and please remember it's not a production line. Your charges are the people who will one day grow up to either pay for my pensioner bus pass or to beat and rob me in the street. No pressure.

I in turn must confess to being unaware of a culture of political correctness in the UK. I am aware that down market tabloid rags such as the Sun (owned by Rupert Murdoch) and the Daily Mail (Supported Fascism in the 1930’s) make great sport of portraying anything which combats racism and homophobia etc as ‘political correctness gone mad….’ Which is deeply concerning given that oppressions of minorities is out of control in the UK.

And as for no control I must confess to once again being slightly mystified. Presumably you can not be referring to the longest sustained fall in crime for 106 years or to the lowest rates of unemployment for a generation so guess this is a reference to public opposition to the war in Iraq and the erosion of our civil liberties.

But other wise thanx very much for the welcome dude i look forward to getting to know you better

*big hugs*, Libertine

libertine...WELCOME.....
i am not young in age, but believe me, i used to be a raging alcoholic, sober now about a year, by the grace of God, and being very involved in AA..an awesome program by the way. and while i am growing now emotionally, an alcoholic stops growing, pretty much emotionally when they begin drinking...so at this point i'd say i'm about 16 and a half??? lol...
anyway...i adore england, have been six times for extended stays..and if i were ever to move from the US ..england is were i would go...so i welcome you with open arms...
and i am liberal left myself....cheers

Awwww thanx for the kind welcome you guys have made me feel very much at home. Just to let you know a little bit more about me. Hmmm lets see...

I'm mixed race my mother is Algerian and came to England about 35 years ago to study English at University. My father is English so i had a quite unusual upbringing which has allowed me to view current world events from a quite unique and objective perspective.

I had a secular upbringing as my mother is not religious and my father is an atheist. I my self probably best fit into the category of agnostic although this is an imperfect definition.

I am quite left wing which i guess mainly stems from my own upbringing in a very deprived English town called Doncaster which had one of the highest unemployment rates in all of Europe.

oh just one more thing... I do not believe it is mandatory to have 'liberal' beliefs in order to have left wing beliefs... indeed in some instances i would venture to suggest that the two are not compatible.

well thats enough about me as i say if you wanna know any more about me add me to your MSN or check out the link in my sig. (incidental the phrase check out what a sexy EMO boy i am is supposed to be ironic

thanx again, Libertine.

Yes, welcome, Libertine. I used to live in the Cotswolds. Those were young and innocent days.
