A couple of demorats have decided to try to raise taxes in order to create more federal spending in the name of preventing gun violence.

Called the “Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act," the bill sponsored by William Pascrell, D-N.J., and Danny Davis, D-Ill., would nearly double the current 11 percent tax on handguns, while raising the levy on bullets and cartridges from 11 percent to 50 percent.

Naturally they will expect their "fair share" of this new pork. Why do I get the strange feeling that "safe communities" would likely be seeing very little (if any) of this additional federal funding?

"This legislation is a pro-active approach to reducing gun violence by using proven preventive programs which have been starved for funds until now," Davis said. "As part of a comprehensive, multidimensional strategy to reduce gun violence, this legislation closes major loopholes in tax law and lays out an equitable, long term, sustainable strategy to provide the requisite resources.”

This is just more reason politicians need to drop the gun issue, they all suck at it. Taxes don't effect people who buy firearms illegally, black markets kind of don't care about any laws these idiots pass, and the more they pass, the stronger the black market gets.

It'll never pass.

Never say never. They are using every angle in the book they can think of.
They know going head on with guns is never going to work. Been tried, failed every time.
Now its going after owners, ammo, permits, medical recs, taxes. Rendering guns useless.
"Drying up" is the actuall term that Diane Fienstein used.

On its own, of course not, but as an amendment snuck into (tacked onto?) another important piece of "crisis" legislation its chances of passing unnoticed are not entirely unheard of.

Most of the revenue is from the taxation of ammo - even "bad guys" still buy ammo OTC in most states.

Medical records....that's where the issue is going to come in. Once Obamacare is fully implemented we will see some kind of legislation which mandates registration based on medical concerns and from there we will see some form of confiscation. They won't do it through taxation.

They gave a stab at that in Florida.
Having doctors ask during the course of exams as to what guns you have.
It was shot down, no pun intended.
But that dont stop them from throwing anything against the walls and seeing what sticks.

Spite is the basis of many things.

Cigarette taxes are greater than the product.

Pain meds contain deadly amounts of APAP.

At least with a gun you can rob a store and get back some of the taxes:)

Possibly, until they start finding people who reload for less than the stores can sell for. The black market will always find a way around laws, and the "psst, c'mere guy" will learn to reload if he can make an extra buck.

I will walk out of a doctors office before I ever give them information that isn't medically relevant. And I will refuse any "registration" requirement.

And exactly what will those additional revenues fund?

More 'gun free zone' signs? A litany of pamphlets and fliers proclaiming the danger of guns? Pictures of people killed by guns on the boxes new guns are sold in?

Another stupid law.

All the patient needed to say is 'none of your business'.

But no, some pro gun moron actually decided that there needed to be a law.

What a waste or paper.

Then you'll see a string of "accidents" unparalleled in our history and they'll severely limit or even outright ban the practice.

And in the long run it won't matter one bit, the very people who learned to reload prior will just keep doing it, the black market exists because of stupid laws, the more you ban, the more you empower the criminals.

If taxing firearms deters the use of firearms, does income tax deter working? Things that make you go "Hmmm."

You know of some sulfur mines where people can go? If you ain't got no powder and you ain't got no shot, you ain't got no reload. But you are partially onto something, what will happen is that the government will turn law abiding gun-owners into criminals.

And it will instantly disappear just like the meth labs did. ;)

Thing is, there is a porous border to the south, plenty of coastline that supply boats can get into, and hilariously understaffed customs at traditional ports. Criminal networks have avenues open to them that are not open to those of us who aren't legally indifferent, look at what happened in NYC when they went to taxes that sent cigarette prices up to 10$, an entire new tax evasion scheme developed with people taking "day trips" to more favored price areas and bootlegging packs, same thing would happen with any ridiculous "reloading ban". Politicians fail every time they think they are smarter than the rest of us, especially considering the exceptional stupidity of the average politician.

Not surprised; doubt it will pass; and I really have no problem with it. I suspect it may have some unintended consequences for the democrats though.

Y'know, I've got an idea. Pass an amendment to the constitution stating that when a district sends idiots like these to D.C. they lose representation for a decade, that would ween down a lot of stupid in the federal government.

Because "none of your business" is a answer challenging the questioner.

I do not see this passing at the federal level.States like California, Illinois and a handful of other anti-2nd amendment states will enact it on the local level if they haven't already.

It is likely just a tactic to be used by solid blue district/state congress critters to show that they are "trying to do something" (get other people's money into their districts/states). I agree that this nonsense has little chance of ever even seeing a floor vote. Any reasonable person knows that there are no magical "effective gov't programs" to limit gun (or any other kind of) violence, that is simply code for, the ever present liberal dream of, curing the "root causes" of crime - letting the huge nanny state try to act as parents to "troubled" youth that they helped to create by funding morons that breed like bunnies but fail as parents.

Right, I'm not saying it will completely disappear, but for your average gun enthusiast who reload's as a cost saving measure, more than likely he's just gonna give up the sport. Them others types, will go rogue...
