Syria conflict: Pompeo 'optimistic' on deal to protect Kurds

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he is optimistic an agreement can be reached with Turkey to protect Kurdish fighters in Syria after the US leaves.

He was speaking in the United Arab Emirates following a phone call with his Turkish counterpart.

US forces in northern Syria have fought alongside a Kurdish militia against Islamic State (IS) militants.

Turkey, however, regards the People's Protection Units (YPG) as a terrorist group and has vowed to crush it.

COMMENT:-

So, as I read it, when Mr. Trump said that "he was going to remove American troops from Syria now" what he really meant was that "he was optimistic that he was going to remove American troops from Syria as soon as the Turks told him that they weren't going to do what they would actually do - which is to attack the groups that the Turks had declared to be terrorists - as soon after the American troops left as possible".

Strangely enough, that actually makes sense.

It doesn't make GOOD sense, but it does make some kind of sense.

Well, Turkey is a NATO ally, and we all know we can't say anything negative about a NATO ally else we destroy alliances, cause discord, and benefit Russia.

Oh Mike is optimistic? I'm sure that will be a source of great comfort to our Kurdish allies.

Saudi came out with a report very critical of the US pullout from Syria. Given the current "problems" regarding Khashoggi I was surprised.

The House of Saud no longer appears to be having any "problems" with the Executive Branch or the Legislative Branch of the government of the United States of America and what happened to a Saudi Arabian citizen on Saudi sovereign soil is outside the purview of the Judicial Branch of the government of the United States of America.
