A grassroots committee is calling for all adults in Switzerland to receive an unconditional income of 2,500 Swiss francs ($2,800) per month from the state, with the aim of providing a financial safety net for the population.
Organizers submitted more than the 100,000 signatures needed to call a referendum on Friday and tipped a truckload of 8 million five-rappen coins outside the parliament building in Berne, one for each person living in Switzerland.
Under Swiss law, citizens can organize popular initiatives that allow the channeling of public anger into direct political action. The country usually holds several referenda a year.
In March, Swiss voters backed some of the world's strictest controls on executive pay, forcing public companies to give shareholders a binding vote on compensation.

I would actually be shocked if the legislation became law. Given that Switzerland is the worlds wealthiest nation on a per-capita basis, they can certainly afford such equality measures. It goes without saying, if they don't have to mangle in the rest of the world's problems, maybe your government can provide basic income for all of its citizens.

It's called socialism....

If such bull**** was implemented they would **** up their monetary system and the GDP would fall and inflation would be more than certain.

Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright. Just like Romney was going to win Illinois in November 2012. Given that you have zero understanding of socialism, your response falls on deaf ears.

The Swiss can afford to do this because they have a tightly nit society where everyone carries their own cross. They don't have many layabout and they don't suffer from the social strains that mass immigration from the third world brings. As long as they keep it that way, they'll be fine.

Why would a nation that has become so successful and so wealthy from capitalism throw it into the wind? If they do pass it, it would be the most irrational thing they've done.

Like you understand socialism?? really?

Yeah I know socialism to the typical progressive is like a big "hippie commune."

Agreed on all counts.

I'd also add that it's possible to do things when you've got a population of 8 million that it isn't reasonably possible to do when you've got a population of 320 million.

Scale adds complexity.

Sounds like a terrible idea to me. Providing a welfare net for the unfortunate is one thing, but a nominal blanket income for everybody? No thank you.
