BERN (EJP)--- Switzerland’s justice minister has called on the Swiss government to reverse a law which makes historical revisionism illegal.

Minister Christoph Blocher is on a campaign to change the law, according to the Neue Zuercher Zeitung (NZZ) newspaper – even if it will impinge upon the sensitivities of minority groups, including the country’s Jewish communities.

I hate to support the nutjobs and tinfoil hat wearers, but it makes sense to me. Case in point, Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon). When I was in elementary school he was treated as a hero... it wasn't until I got older that the negative things that he had done came out and changed the perception. If there were a set way that Columbus was to be discussed, then the atrocities would have gone unmentioned. I'm DEFINITELY not saying that this is the case with genocide/holocaust deniers, but I think the constant search for truth is important and laws that could possibly hinder that exploration are a bit too dangerous.

Immediately after any conflict, the facts demonizing the loser are brouth out into the open.

Basically History is written by the victors.

However after a number of years have passed we find that the History written by the victors is challenged by those who would at best been ' fellow travellors' with the losers and at worst actually involved in the nefarious conduct of the losers.

Simply put, Time heals everything.

This is a good idea mostly because our knowledge of history is constantly changing as we learn more, and thus history sometimes must be honestly revised. That said, denying the holocaust has other effects beyond simple misinformation.

It's not illegal in the US. Is there a problem with it being legal in Switzerland?
