Daily Kos: State of the Nation
The real point of interest is the company in California who developed Tamiflu, Gilead Sciences, listed on the NASDAQ as (GILD). US Secretary of Defense, Donald H. Rumsfeld, was Chairman of the Board of Gilead Sciences from 1997 until early 2001 when he became Defense Secretary.

A as-yet-unconfirmed report is that Rumsfeld recently purchased additional stock in his former company, Gilead Sciences, worth $18 million, making him one of its largest if not the largest stock owners today.

We already died off from the bird flue, remember?

Swine Flu is a non-issue.

Swine Flu is a non-issue.

Yes and no.

Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director said this:

“This strain of swine influenza that’s been cultured in a laboratory is something that’s not been seen anywhere actually in the United States and the world, so this is actually a new strain of influenza that’s been identified."

Medical Director: Swine Flu Was ?Cultured In A Laboratory?

Furthermore, Tucker posted a link about how the first victim (patient zero) of the flu had no contact with pigs whatsoever.

While the diease itself isn't much of a big deal, if this is the first of the genetically engineered diease made by individuals, this is very, very, bad news.

Generally it helps to understand the situation before making conclusions. You generally fail at this instead jumping to conclusions with absolutely no facts.

Let's go over the facts for a change.

The transmission of genes from three individual flu viruses into a single one in a way that allows infections is pretty rare, virtually impossible according to several experts, especially due to how genes interact. Getting a virus that can infect numerous species without genes interacting in a way that reduces or stops the virus is like rolling the dice for an obscenely long sequence and getting it all right the first time. It's not impossible, but it's pretty darn hard.

Patient Zero lived in an area where no pigs were infected. Therefore patient Zero could not have been infected by contact. Thus raises the question of how did he get it?

Dr. John Carlo, Dallas Co. Medical Director is not a whack job and has credible credentials.

Numerous individuals have the expertise and knowledge to craft specific viruses and bacterial diseases. Furthermore, the propagating of the necessary tools, specifically computers to run the hard data crunching are becoming ubiquitous and relatively affordable. Historically, groups like Aum Shirkyo attempted to take naturally occurring bacteria like Anthrax and attempt to weaponize them. The problem lies in delivery. Engineering a viral diease that can be transferred through mere interaction is far more useful. The US and USSR spent billions on programs involving bacteria and viruses that can be easily transferred through mere contact.

Experts have been warning us for years about the possibility of engineered viruses. Discovery Channel and History channel have been running shows on the potential end of the world for years and one of the top 5 is pandemic, possibly man made.

So how about you stop with the knee jerk reactions for a change?

Why is this even a thing?

We have 7 confirmed deaths, and the flu is a mild flu that is not even up to the standards of an average flu outbreak.

My purpose in posting the links was that, in part, access to credible information would reduce the risk of excessive fear, as well as allow people to have useful information that would reduce their own risk of exposure e.g., precautions to avoid the flu.

Northwestern University engineering professor Dr. Dirk Brockmann recently highlighted a reality of how humans perceive risk. He explained, "People have a very weird perception of large numbers... If you have 2,000 cases of flu in a country of 300 million, most people think they're going to be one of the 2,000, not one of the 299,998,000." Hopefully, access to reliable information can help counter those kind of misperceptions/exaggerated fears.

Not trying to be a stickler, but this is a sticky post and I think it should contain only the information that is necessary to the reason why it became a sticky post.

It would be awesome if the debating/bickering/what have you can be split and made into an entirely separate thread. Possibly with the title "Swine Flu Pandemic 2009, Tin-Foil Hats are Go!!!"

Or everyone who thinks swine flue is news worthy can STFU.

As a compromise, I suggest the mod team open a sub-forum similar to the global worming forum so that those of us who are interested in REAL news can enjoy DP without having to wade through all this swine flue nonsense. Alternatively, all such swine flue threads could be diverted to the Conspiracy Theory forums.
