The Local - Reinfeldt blocks gender quotas for top jobs

The government is to retract the previous administration's goal of ensuring that 50 per cent of all top management jobs in state bodies go to women.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, currently in the process of reviewing the criteria for public sector appointments, has ruled out gender quotas as one of the variables, Svenska Dagbladet reorts.

"We have in various contexts been opposed to extensive quotas as a method," Reinfeldt told Svenska Dagbladet.

Former equality minister Mona Sahlin is disappointed that Reinfeldt's government will not continue the policy begun by the Social Democrats in 2003.

Thought Swedes would like to discuss this and thought that other peoples might be interested in what is going on in Sweden right now.

People should be hired solely based on their qualifications. Not based on their gender, race, etc... I don't think that trying to "help" women into these posititions is right. If you've worked hard enough you can get there whether you're a woman or not. Part of why men are hired for these positions is because, basically, they tend to have the right education and so forth. If a woman really showed that she could do the job better than anyone else, I'm sure she'd be hired.

Trying to lift the woman above the man, if you know what I mean, isn't going to make a permanent change anyway. I don't think that's a successful method.

I think it's good that there will be alot more females in top management jobs, But I think that they would choose the best person for this job.
If a male is better to do this work and they are looking for a female, the male should get the job. I think with this goal alot of top management jobs will choose female, just because the government set this as a goal.
I think that Fredrik was right in this case.
