Sweden coronavirus: Country records highest death tally in 150 years in first half of 2020 - CNN

(CNN)Sweden recorded its highest death tally in 150 years for the first half of 2020, according to the country's official statistics office.

Between January and June this year, 51,405 deaths were registered -- more than 6,500 fatalities (or 15%) over the same period in 2019.
This is the highest number of deaths in Sweden during the first half of the year since 1869, when the country was struck by famine and 55,431 people died.

Unlike most countries, Sweden did not go into a lockdown when the pandemic spread across Europe in early spring. Instead, there was an emphasis on personal responsibility, with most bars, schools, restaurants and salons remaining open.

Despite the more relaxed approach, only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed the antibodies needed to fight the disease by late April -- well below the 70-90% needed for herd immunity.

By early June, the country's coronavirus death toll was at more than 4,500. According to Johns Hopkins University, it now stands at 5,802.
Much of the criticism around Sweden's response has focused on the high death rates in care homes. Sweden's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell admitted in June that the country's Public Health Agency "didn't know that there would be such a big potential for the disease to spread in elderly care homes, with so many deaths."

Well, I guess that experiment didn't work out.

and posters here, and Republicans across the nation, wanted our country (huge compared to Sweden) to just let this virus run free (even though our population density is massively more dense than Sweden in the big places).

New York City population density: 26,403 per square mile
Stockholm population density: 364 per square kilometer

you can't fix stupid.

That's almost as much as all the Americans who died in the Vietnam War.

Look at it this way, the US is no longer #1 in every coronavirus category.

Enough Trumplodyte Governors followed the Sweden model to make us the most virulent country on the planet. America is great again! (just not in a way to be proud of...)

Sweden's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell still thinks that the 50,000 figure is acceptable to achieve herd immunity in the end. Tegnell also said that it is very dangerous to believe face masks would change the game when it comes to COVID-19 and he sees no point in wearing a face mask in Sweden, not even on public transport. I guess he is influenced by Facebook trolls or worse to make important decisions for his country.

Anders Tegnell is still wrong and the Swedish government has a lot to answer for.

After making the post, I noticed that the coronavirus mutated in Sweden, weakening it significantly from the original Italian strain (B.1/G) that wreaked havoc on Europe and the United States. Anders Tegnell can afford to sit idle and experiment with herd immunity because of this lucky break.

It is believed by some who accept the herd immunity principle that between 80% and 90% have to contract the virus for this to happen and scientists say this can happen only if high death rates are acceptable. In contrast, scientists tell us that the virus can be fought by isolating it and preventing the contagion from spreading. We are told the virus will be with us for some time which puts much importance on the development of a vaccine but that might never happen. In the meantime people need to exercise care and medical experts need to find ways of treating those affected.
