Suspected Mastermind of USS Cole Bombing Confesses

Waleed Mohammed Bin Attash, long suspected of plotting the bombing of the USS Cole, confessed to planning the attack during a hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to a Pentagon transcript released Monday.

He also said he helped plan the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 that killed 213, the transcript said. Seventeen sailors were killed and 37 injured when suicide bombers steered an explosives-laden boat into the battleship on Oct. 12, 2000.

Not to be picky, but your news source should know that the USS Cole is not a battleship, it is a destroyer. Considerably smaller and more agile than a battleship, of which there are none currently in service with the US Navy.
 

When does he go before a firing squad?
 
Don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but this guy was one of those spirited away by rendition and tortured. If the torture extracted his confession, and he did not do it, then there is an excellent chance that the real perpetrator is going to get away.

There is no doubt that he is a bad actor who needs to be put away, but I heard on the news that he confessed to many things, including the beheading of Pearle, and planning 911. So many confessions under duress makes me suspect that he made the admissions in order to stop the mistreatment. If all confessions are accepted, then cases against others may be seriously compromised, but that's what happens with torture, and is the main reason it doesn't work. Aside from the moral, and even Biblical, reasons not to torture, the practical reason also applies.

Meanwhile, I am glad he is in custody, whether or not his admission about the Cole is true.
 
I think you might be confusing news stories. The admission of beheading Daniel Pearle was a different terrorist and a different admission. This is something new.
