Surprisingly, not a trump or DeSantis policy

I understand the need to control their numbers to preserve other species, but who in their right mind would make it a contest for children? Sick idea. Glad it backfired. There are better ways to do this. Most metro counties in Georgia capture feral cats, spay or neuter them, clip the tip of one ear so they can be identified as a fixed animal, and release them back into the wild. It's a system that works.

Any animal that isn't some kind of bird is a FERAL in New Zealand.

It's not wrong to offer a bounty on cats, but it is wrong to ask children to do the killing. All kinds of killing is adult business.

Mind you, I'm also concerned for the cats. They have to die, but it should be done humanely (eg with a bullet) and children can't do that.

A long term solution which isn't so attractive when your native wildlife is as vulnerable as New Zealand's.

In criminology, killing animals is the first step toward being comfortable with killing humans.

I'm sure New Zealand doesn't want that. Why not give dart guns to veterinary college students and let them bring the cats to the nearest animal shelter to learn how to spay and neuter for summer internship?

And so, we certainly shouldn't encourage children to do it.

They're probably looking for something bigger scale than that. They could offer a cash bounty to (adult) hunters, and of course vegans who don't believe in killing animals would opt out.

I thought about the same thing. We teach children to be kind to animals and we watch out for indications of unhealthy behavior. This sends a contradictory message, not good.

Well, they could expand it to adults, sure. But if you tie it into a job/training of some sort, it's always more palatable. Perhaps LEO's in training could do 'target' shooting, etc. (though my tummy turns on that one) and students could euthanize the older cats, spay and neuter the kittens, and offer them up to people who want the pets. Sounds like they need a multi-pronged approach and I'm looking for areas where this decidedly awful task would have a positive relative to the betterment of society as a whole. Just my thoughts though

I had a feral cat in my house once. It was not one bit friendly. And yes I did try feeding it, but you know it's not that simple. Wild animals don't just suddenly trust you because you fed them one time. Wild animals get really hostile if you trap them inside.

It's an "awful task" which most of us have no problem delegating to a slaughterhouse worker. Unless you believe that cats have inherently more right to live, than cattle or pigs. Or I suppose maybe you're a vegan (I'm not).

Brilliant idea. Send kids out with air rifles to shoot cats. They can't tell the difference between strays and outdoor pet cats, and who says they can even aim? It'd be a festival of stupid butchery, with cats slowly dying over days from wounds... any number of them then being outdoor pets to boot.

Easy - Peasey. A three step process.

1. Get them all high on catnip.

2. Round them all up by playing cat music while they're stoned. Cozmo's Air might just do it.

3. Pack them all on a boat bound for China, wrapped in recipes for General Tso's Chicken.

Problem solved.
Just a thought ....
(I slay me!)

Cats in the wild vs wildlife.

That music sounds like a cat purring.
