Supreme Court allows Trump administration to enforce toughest restriction yet on asylum requests

It stands - for now.

The Supreme Court thinks there's a chance Trump's order is legal?

Or they don't care whether it is or not?

What is happening here? I thought it was a slam dunk that the order is illegal.

Seems like a logical and just decision. There is a difference in escaping persecution in your native country and Voluntarily wanting to migrate to another country. Glad the Supreme Court understands the difference even if the left can't.

Liberals are the absolute puppets of the plutocracy, and cannot think outside of its desires.

This is absolutely disgusting. The Supreme Court is aiding and abetting this criminal president.

Are you for real. Th4 supreme court is the final arbiter of this lands laws. The Supreme Court is ensuring the future of this country. It's
shaping a three point landing by eliminating the liberal dream of allowing America to become a boarding house for 3rd worlders of every stripe .

Yes I am 'for real', this is an abomination, this goes against everything this country was founded on. Trump and his Supreme Court toadies are following the orders of Stephen Miller who is the white nationalist Trump whisperer.

OK! Please tell what this country was founded on that Trump is not observing to the letter!

I am sorry you don't believe in the rule of law. It must be hard.

This is odd:

"Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted their dissent. Five justices were needed to grant the request; the votes of the others were not publicly announced."

I wonder if the other seven justices all voted yes or if some of them just didn't join the dissent. As much as possible, we need these votes to not be close and certainly not to fall along ideological lines.

The United States Constitution, that's enough for now.

We won't ever know why they tried to immigrate because they're being disqualified before they ever talk to a government official.

7 to 2

I believe there are criminal elements inside our government, that's what I believe, and they're slowly destroying the rule of law as set forth in the Constitution. Blow it off as nothing, but you're the one that's going to have to live in this shameful country for many years, not me.

Miller is the Nosferatu of American politics. That guy is evil in human form.

7 to 2

#WINNING

How do you know it was 7-2? The vote wasn't released. All we know is that two justices joined a public dissent. I hope it was 7-2, for the country's sake, but nowhere is reporting a 7-2 vote that I can find.

You seem to be subtracting 2 from 9 and assuming you know a vote that wasn't released. Here's another one:

"No vote was recorded in the asylum case order, but Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted their disapproval of the court’s action in a strongly worded dissent."

It goes against the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 and its amendments as recorded in the U.S. Code.

"Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien’s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title."

8 U.S. Code SS 1158 - Asylum | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute

That's the main thing. I gather there are also other issues in how the regulation was made, but mostly it appears it's simply against the law.

They can apply in their own countries.
