And the UN is said to be "meeting to discuss the crisis". Meaning, they will talk about it and nothing will be done (except possibly a strongly worded letter)

A guide to Sudan's "issues":

What is this speculation based on?

Sudan has had a series of shaky governments since is became independent from the UK and Egypt in 1956; this is just one more upheaval in a long line of governmental collapses in its history.

Good thread. In terms of the response from the international community, the first BBC article said:

“US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the military's actions "are a betrayal of Sudan's peaceful revolution". The US has halted $700m (£508m) in aid.”

The article goes on to say:

“The US has joined the UK, EU, UN and African Union, of which Sudan is a member, in demanding the release of political leaders who are now under house arrest.”

Maybe the withholding of the aid by the US will be enough to convince the military to release the prisoners.

Well known fact: UN Peacekeepers are rapists.

I doubt it. You think these guys will care? They'll just go buddy up to Russia or China for money.

And your point is . . . . . . what?

My comment questioned your contention that the UN "will talk about it and nothing will be done". What is the basis of that assertion?

Sudan is a failed state and will remain so for the foreseeable future. What do you propose members of the UN, collectively or individually, do about it?

who cares? **** em

This has been a year of coups in Africa. The military taking back power from the Transitional Government is a bleak sign, and a tragedy. A u-turn back to the days of Omar al-Bashir.
