“Two new peer-reviewed studies are showing a sharp drop in mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The drop is seen in all groups, including older patients and those with underlying conditions, suggesting that physicians are getting better at helping patients survive their illness.

"We find that the death rate has gone down substantially," says Leora Horwitz, a doctor who studies population health at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine and an author on one of the studies, which looked at thousands of patients from March to August.

The study, which was of a single health system, finds that mortality has dropped among hospitalized patients by 18 percentage points since the pandemic began. Patients in the study had a 25.6% chance of dying at the start of the pandemic; they now have a 7.6% chance.”

Better news, anyways but we’re far from being out of the woods. At least it’s improved from the presumed death sentence to something less lethal.

But but but Trump bad!

One of the things learned was not to be in such a huge rush to stick people on ventilators out of an abundance of caution.

I'm sorry MR, do you think your childish post magically absolves trump of ignoring the intel and politicizing mask wearing, social distancing, partial shutdowns and treating it like a deadly infectious disease. He is still mocking people for wearing masks. You just dont get to ignore that. Well, if you're not in a cult that is.

Simply put, they are learning how to better treat patients with COVID and learning what NOT to do.
One of the things that did the most good was just putting people on their stomachs.
It apparently aids oxygen intake and aids lung drainage.

We have gotten better at treating it, and it has also mutated and they are not seeing the same symptoms as much....

though this may be shifting with the cooler weather. In my wife's COVID unit they had not had anyone on a Vent in more than a month and she was on vacation for a week and they went from 2 patients in the unit to more than 10 with two needing vents in less than 4 hours.

We are not out of the woods, and nobody knows for sure what the cooler weather will bring.

WTF does Trump have to do with it? Nothing! The credit goes to the medical and scientific community that Trump rails against every day!

I'm confused. First you say it is all Trump's fault that the death numbers are so bad and then you congratulate the scientific community on being able to bring down the rate of deaths.

I am not sure why that is confusing. Trump ****ed up the initial response to the pandemic and thus more people died. Eventually the medical and scientific community have been able to mitigate some of the damage done by Trump now that they have a better understanding of the virus and how it attacks the body.

It should be noted that Trump attacks this same medical and scientific community on a daily basis now, undermining the public's faith in them...all to cover up what a shit job he has done.

You are right. You are confused. Apparently you have a hard time understanding how science and medical treatment works and only view the world through a political lens.

Trump has NOTHING to do with the improvements and even worked against some of them. Here’s an excerpt for the OP article. As you can see one of the reasons for improvement cited by the medical community is increased mask wearing which Trump has discouraged and Trump had nothing to do with the other items, the medical and scientific community get credit for them. If anything Trump hampered those efforts as well by pushing for the use of useless treatments.

“Doctors around the country say that they're doing a lot of things differently in the fight against COVID-19 and that treatment is improving. "In March and April, you got put on a breathing machine, and we asked your family if they wanted to enroll you into some different trials we were participating in, and we hoped for the best," says Khalilah Gates, a critical care pulmonologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. "Six plus months into this, we kind of have a rhythm, and so it has become an everyday standard patient for us at this point in time."

Doctors have gotten better at quickly recognizing when COVID-19 patients are at risk of experiencing blood clots or debilitating "cytokine storms," where the body's immune system turns on itself, says Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease, critical care and emergency medicine physician who works at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

He says that doctors have developed standardized treatments that have been promulgated by groups such as the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

"We know that when people are getting standardized treatment, it makes it much easier to deal with the complications that occur because you already have protocols in place," Adalja says. "And that's definitely what's happened in many hospitals around the country."

But Horwitz and Mateen say that factors outside of doctors' control are also playing a role in driving down mortality. Horwitz believes that mask-wearing may be helping by reducing the initial dose of virus a person receives, thereby lessening the overall severity of illness for many patients.”

Another reason why the death rate is so high is that in addition to discouraging mask wearing Trump has also discouraged development of a good testing, quarantine and contact tracing program, something that Biden plans to do.

There's more to death rates falling than that. Previous exposures. Covid is almost ubiquitous in our environment at this point. As such, our bodies are exposed to - shall we call them microdoses - virus particles more and more just because the virus is now "there" in our environments. These exposures are not enough of an inoculum to cause disease but they do serve to prime the pump of the immune system to mount an anamnestic response. Sometimes this response prevents disease - which is why we vaccinate people - and sometimes it only lessens the duration and intensity of the disease. Yes, there have been advances in how Covid is treated but good old Mother Nature deserves a huge round of applause for her part too.

And why would this come as any surprise to you?

and its precursors have been available to you daily here at DP (at Daily Statistical Summary of COVID-19) since early May.

It’s not a surprise (and I didn’t say that it was). I posted the article to hopefully spur some non-shitty discussion, but then you had to show up. Thanks a bunch.

Sorry to bust your bubble, but your "breaking news" is something that anyone who has actually been paying attention all along was fully aware of.

Those who have NOT been paying attention all along simply don't care about anything that doesn't conform to what they want reality to be. Besides

all sort of indicate that the simplistic "The Mortality Rate is DOWN! The Mortality Rate is DOWN!" to be chanted isn't actually all that relevant to what is happening NOW.

What are you actually babbling about? If you have an issue with the article take it up with NPR. I didn’t write it. If you think you have some ownership of this forum, then I suggest you take that up with the mods. Otherwise, piss off.

I can't help it if NPR has to recycle old news.
