Why? For speaking English. :2mad:

Imagine sending your kids off to school, but when they get to the bus they are told they can't get on because they speak English.

That's right, English.

It happened to a few children in St. Paul and now the school district is apologizing.

Okay, so they have a seperate bus for non English speaking sudents, that's all well and good, but the drive could have given these kids a lift to school, and told them of other transportation.

You could get a distorted view from this thread if you don't read the actual article.
What the article says is that the kids were on the wrong bus. The district had changed the bus routes and the bus that the kids were on was for a language academy that was not the school of the kids. So they weren't really kicked off because they spoke English.

However, the district points out, that particular bus route serves one of three language academies. The one at Phalen Lake is for Hmong students learning English.

The academies all have separate bus routes to keep its students together.

The district decided to enforce the separate routes beginning Monday, but it did not tell the Armstrong family.

According to the article the driver did give the kids a ride to school. Apparently he told them that he wouldn't do it again...and that he wouldn't give them a ride home. Not that that is right....but it wasn't as implied in the original post.

So the decision was made for adminstrative reasons rather than anti-Americanism. You wouldn't have guessed that from the first few responses...

Precisely. Where do these people come up with these easily mis-represented non-issues? Do they hear them on talk radio or something, and then go looking for articles without reading them? It is amazing to me how often they are taken in by this kind of deception, and yet still consider their sources credible.

You can usually identify them by the original poster.

Because they don't allow English speaking students on that bus. That's the point.

Separate but equal?

Separate but equal?

That's not down to racism, that's down to administrative reasons and possibly to allow the kids to talk to kids who'll actually be in their portion of the school and foster friendships with them that will make their time their more pleasent.

The difference here is that no one is forced to attend certain schools because they speak English or another language.
The issue represented in the post was that the kids were kicked off the bus because they spoke English.....that would be wrong. But that isn't what happened.

So let's keep them seperate, perhaps they could ride in the back of the bus so they don't mingle. Wouldn't want any diversity to happen and we certainly don't want the kids who don't speak English very well to have a chance to tale to them.

These sound like the same arguments the Dems used to keep segregation going.

You are going off on a whole other issue. It is one that I actually agree with you on though. I think the students would be better served if they were bussed together...and if they were integrated into classes with English speaking students to help them learn their English.
That said...and going back to the original post....the students were not kicked off because they spoke English....that is a clear distortion of the contents of the article.

A distinction without merit. They are forced to ride other buses because of their nationality, American. Make them ride in the back? What happened to "diversity is good"?

Again....that distorts what I was saying. The point of the article is that they were on the wrong bus. The driver did not take the route to the school where they were going. They were on the wrong bus. But again...I agree that it probably would be better for all the kids to integrate them. The non-English kids would probably pick up English better...and the English speaking kids might get some diversity/exposure to other cultures which is almost always a good idea.

Yep, the quicker the better and perhaps the American students might learn the some of the other languages to boot.

Yes they were even thought the bus was taking all the students to the same school.

That is NOT what is happening. The school bus was for students going to a school for non-english speakers where they learn English.

The ultimate bottom line from the article is that the students didn't even live in the school district anymore....so the school district really didn't have any responsibility to provide transportation to the school in any event.

Excellent point, disneydude.

Did I say any of that, Stinger? No, I didn't. Did I say whether I thought the school districts ideas was one I agreed with? No, I didn't, and no, it's not, but the bottom line is that racism didn't motivate the bus driver's decision. Following a rule set by the school did.

That is NOT what is happening. The school bus was for students going to a school for non-english speakers where they learn English.

They were going to the same school. There were "academies" within the schools.

"Armstrong left work early Tuesday, forced to pick up her kids from Phalen Lake Elementary School....................................However, the district points out, that particular bus route serves one of three language academies. The one at Phalen Lake is for Hmong students learning English."

I'm talking about the school systems decision which the bus driver was following.

Again....that distorts what I was saying. The point of the article is that they were on the wrong bus.

Why is it the "wrong bus" it is a school bus to take students to the school they attended.

The driver did not take the route to the school where they were going.

Yes he did, the "academy" is within the school the Armstrong kids and the Hmong students all attend.

They were on the wrong bus.

Yes because they spoke English not because the bus would not take them where they were going. IT DID.

But again...I agree that it probably would be better for all the kids to integrate them.

Absolutely, the school board made a dumb decision.

First of all, I gotta agree with the "this is a dumb idea" crowd. Why is there a need to separate the children based on language to the same school? If I were a parent, I would seriously be pissed at this. I understand this is what the school district decided, but it is still a bad idea IMO.

Second of all what the driver did was absolutely wrong. When dealing with the welfare of children, you don't purposely tell a student they will be stranded and they can't be bussed home. You explain to them that this was the wrong bus they took and they can take them home this time, but to inform their parents of the new policies.

and then reinstate the old policy.
