Many people don't understand that the United States does not use its oil supply because we are cautiously preparing for the potential of a war in which our enemies would not sell us oil. Thus, we would only have our supply. Short sighted, myopic individuals say, just use our oil supply. Of course, that is foolish.

Agreed. It is foolish to sacrifice such a crucial asset in return for short term gain. However, we need to get rid of oil for both economic and military reasons.

We use almost every last drop of our own oil supply. According to the 2005 aer (2006 isn't out yet), we produce a little over 5 million barrels per day and export about 30,000 barrels per day (those exports mostly go to specialized refineries in Canada for processing, and we buy the products back). We use about 20 million barrels per day.

We have no spare capacity, and haven't since about 1971.

Go to Energy Information Administration (EIA) - Annual Energy Review for the report.
