'Stop Torturing Protesters,' UN Experts Tell Belarus

The UN's special rapporteur on torture told Belarus on Tuesday that it must "stop torturing protesters" and bring to justice any police officers who have beaten them with impunity. Nils Melzer and 14 other UN human rights experts said in a statement they had received reports of 450 documented cases of torture and ill-treatment of people deprived of their liberty in the mass protests and arrests following the disputed re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko. "We are extremely alarmed at the hundreds of allegations of torture and other ill-treatment in police custody," they said. The joint statement was signed, among others, by Anais Marin, special rapporteur on human rights in Belarus, and Clement Nyaletsossi Voule, special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of expression. The experts do not speak for the United Nations but report their findings to it. They said torture "cannot be justified for any reason", nor could political instability be invoked to practice enforced disappearances. "Authorities in Belarus must immediately put an end to all human rights violations and combat impunity," they said.

The experts said 6,700 people had been detained since the August 9 election — including journalists or passers-by "arbitrarily arrested and hastily sentenced." "No person should be criminally charged for their peaceful participation in a demonstration," said the experts. "We are also concerned that indiscriminate arrests continued over the weekend at a peaceful women's march in the capital, Minsk, on Saturday and at peaceful protests in many cities on Sunday," they added. The experts said they would continue to monitor the situation and attempt to engage with the Belarus authorities.

Lukashenka's previous 'moderation' was only a subterfuge. His true pariah nature has re-emerged since August 9.

President Trump: "in America, we will never yield to the will of a mob that causes riots."
This is understandable. Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine must yield to the will of the crowd... More precisely, Ukraine has already conceded once, and has been living since then - as a crowd, not as a state.

Yes, precisely.

But only the right sort of crowd. The one organised and funded by the West. The one provided with English placards (for western media purposes), roses, cookies. The crowd which is incredibly middle class and full of English speaking students.

We don't want the wrong sort of crowds though. No working class, no non English speakers, no normal people permitted.

But only the right sort of crowd.

Ukraine voted. Unlike Russia and Belarus, thousands of international election monitors were welcomed.

The difference between a functioning democracy and 2 dictatorships.

Mass protests against the authorities have been taking place in Bulgarian cities for two months, amid huge social inequality and corruption scandals. Ever heard about them? Dozens of people are lying in hospitals after heavy police crackdowns. But all the world's hipocritical media are silent. Because Boyko Borisov is"our son of a bitch."

Whataboutism. What happens in Bulgaria is not the topic of this thread.

If you want to discuss Bulgaria, create a thread in the Europe forum.

Do you remember how the US stopped buying oil from Saudi Arabia after the murder of a journalist, imposed strict sanctions and found king Salman guilty of murder?
I don't...

This thread is about Belarusian's being tortured in Lukashenka's gulags.

No it is mostly lies and distortions from your side. But anyway, since you are self appointed expert on torture, can you tell me on this news: Portland police arrested 27 people. Is it the outrages of the regime or the execution of police work?

No it is mostly lies and distortions from your side.

So you don't care about torture. Everyone reading this knows that now.

Your hero Stalin loved torture also.

The best and unquenchable argument in favor of Lukashenko and his regime is the protesters against him.
Even the opponents of the Minsk protests, see that there has never been such a peaceful, soft, well-mannered, disciplined and civilized revolutionary crowd with their shoes removed in front of the bench, perhaps never in the history of revolutionary crowds.
Well, except for some quiet Czechs in 1989.
For example the Moscow crowd of August 1991 was somewhat more toothy, and things we can say about the events of six years ago in Ukraine and many other events in different places.....
And the very thing that so irritates a skeptic and a conservative in the Minsk protests - simplicity, naive romanticism and complete lack of understanding of how things are done in politics and what happens after such revolutions - this is just a clear proof that we are looking at people from the greenhouse, young people who have been saved from birth from bitter knowledge of what it is:
Oligarchy
Migration and migrants
Street violence
Total unemployment
Wild theft of bosses
And complete disappointment in yesterday's political idols.
Who is this mysterious man? Who built this amazing greenhouse on the periphery of the world economy, from which came a crowd of the kind that is never found in the global garbage dumpsters?
Who brought up these trusting kids, who take off their shoes before climbing on a bench during a revolutionary march and didn't even think about looting?

Spoil your children, take good care of them, gentlemen, you don't know what awaits them in the future...

And signature: Lukashenko.
