How many of you think that we should stop the war?

List why.

I personally think no at this point just because i think the terrorists will just have a better reason to attack America and its imporant areas. So i feel much safer with the war over there.

Just to make things clear, please clarify what war are we talking about here?

I mean, the obvious would be the "War in Iraq", but I just want to make sure.

I voted Yes, we should stop the war. We should do everything in our power to secure and stabilize Iraq and then start pulling our troops out as able. This would stop the war.

Perhaps you should clarify your question. I don't think you'll fnid a single person who doesn't want to "stop the war". Where you will find disagreements is in what manner the war should be stopped (pull out now, wait as long as it takes, change goals, etc.).

Once it is won, yes -- after all, continuing past that point would be silly.

Well what do you guys propose we do? Just tell Iraq we are sorry and just pull our troops out? Honestly that doesnt seem like the smartest thing to do at this point. I would belive bomb the hell outa them.

Bomb the hell out of who? The Iraqis? No one that has any sense of military education and realistic logic wants us to "tell Iraq we are sorry and just pull our troops out".

The REAL debate is on HOW the war can be finished. HOW can Iraq become a stabilized and terror free nation? IMO, Iraq cannot be a mirror of American diplomacy and it cannot have a Shiite or Sunni leader. I personally think Biden's plan for Iraq is the best option out there now. The gist of his plan is to separate Iraq into three states (one for each active segment), and have a federal government with control over the countries assets and borders but with limited control over the individual states.

The intermingling of Sunni's and Shiites will not work. The fighting will never stop unless a ruthless dictator is in place to provoke fear, such as Saddam did.

I agree that the fighting will probably not stop, unless somehow the Iraqis suddenly become more enlightened than the rest of us puny humans.

But does the fighting have to involve actual combat? Why not non-violent conflict? Debate? Many of us puny humans can force ourselves to avoid a fistfight/gunfight/nuclear war/etc./etc. when we disagree with someone, why not the Iraqis?

Then again, I have never experienced religious conflict, because in the USA we just don't do that. There are probably Sunni's and Shiites living near each other here in the USA without killing each other. But perhaps not.

From all the history I know, religious conflict is.........bad.

A question: If Iraq were divided up into three sections, with each religious group being in control of a section, would that stop the violence? Or would it just reinforce the walls currently in place between the factions?

It would infact reinforce the walls but it would bring a temporary peace and allow for diplomatic solutions without being accompanied by bloodshed. Of course there is always the chance of border disputes by militia.

Yeah, let's stop the war. What the hell. Screw it. Terrorists, you win.

I can see what you're saying, I guess I'm becoming more of a social liberal and a fiscal conservative with time. It's time to get over whether or not the war should have been started and doing what we need to do to get this thing in order. A failure in Iraq would be devastating for us in the long run.
